Eastwood’s Beck again named District 7 Coach of Year
Eastwood volleyball coach Jeff Beck has named the District 7 Division II Coach of the Year. In addition, three of the eight first team choices are Eagles.

Eagles Courtney Rolf, Arika LaVoy, and Jaci Juergens are first team choices, Brooke Salazar is second team, and Elissa Wolff, Brittney Firsdon, and Andrea Kotula are honorable mention. Rolf, a 6-foot-1 senior middle hitter, is also honorable mention all-state.

The 15th-ranked Eagles finished the regular season 20-2 and a perfect 14-0 in the Northern Buckeye Conference to win the outright league title. It was Eastwood’s third straight league title under Beck.

Two years ago as a first-year coach, Beck’s Eagles shared the Suburban Lakes League title with Otsego. Last year, Eastwood tied Genoa for the final SLL title.

This year, the Eagles were bounced from the district tournament for the third straight year by Celina to finish 22-3. Eastwood’s other two losses were to Clay and Notre Dame Academy.

Beck formerly coached at Perrysburg, where his Yellow Jackets went 79-29 in five years including a berth in the 2006 Division I state semifinals. His first Eastwood squad was ranked as high as 16th in the state coaches' poll and that year he was also named District 7 Coach of the Year.

In District 7, Clay’s Kristen Kayser is named second team D-I and teammate Kim Crawford is HM.

In D-III, local second team choices are Jane Schlievert (Genoa) and Sammy Whiteman (Lake). HM choices are Madeline Phillips (Woodmore), Chelsea Guadaramma (Northwood), Cindy Szyperski (Northwood), and Hunter Giles (Genoa). The Coach of the Year is Evergreen’s Kelsy L. Wulf, a Lake graduate.

Kylee Ault first team
Clay senior tennis player Kylee Ault has been named first team All-Three Rivers Athletic Conference.

Ault was in her third year as Clay's No. 1 singles player and was also chosen a first-team all-league player last year in the Toledo City League.

Clay has two second team choices, junior Kristina Figurova and senior Abbey Herrera. Clay HM choices are senior Ann Klewer and junior Lisa Durrant. Herrera and Durant were second team all-league choices last year.

Barons No. 1
Grant Meyer of Curtice, a Genoa High sophomore, plays for the Cleveland Barons Midget Minor hockey team that is ranked No. 1 in the country by MY Hockey Rankings.

The Barons play in Barons Arena, also known as Lakefront Lines Arena, in Parma.

Meyer has four goals and 15 assists in 21 games and is one of the team’s offensive leaders early in the season. According to the Barons’ website, the team is getting attention from NCAA and Ontario (Junior) Hockey League programs.

“It’s a great accomplishment for our kids,” said Coach Brett Harkins in his second season with this group. “We were never ranked any higher than sixth last season so we are taking strides and getting better.

“We made a few roster changes from last season and as a staff, felt like we upgraded at certain positions and also lost some key players as well. My brother, Donnie, director of scouting for the Plymouth Whalers (OHL) has a great eye for talent and really identified and recruited some key players for our team this season.”

Not many midget minor teams have NCAA Division I programs at their practice, but the Barons reported they have attracted those programs this year.

“I don’t blame them,” added Harkins. “I have been contacted by most of the top teams in the NCAA regarding my players and it’s fun and exciting for my boys. Miami (OH), Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan to name a few are interested in our players.” (written for MY hockey by Dom Hennig)
