WRSCsports.com broadcaster Mark Reeves is this year’s Press football soothsayer champion with a 108-37 (74.5 percent) record choosing local high school, college, and professional football games. It is the second time in three years Reeves has won the championship.
“I feel very fortunate to have won. The entire panel is good at picking games,” Reeves, a former longtime Clay football statistician, said. “I feel am truly blessed to be part of this and to have won this year.
“It is kind of a crapshoot. I guess I am proof of the old ‘a monkey can choose the winner’ urban myth. But really I try to stay away from picking my heart, yet listening to my gut feeling. I think we all do that though. The Eastwood pick (over Genoa) was just a gut feeling in a toss-up game. (If) they met again in the playoffs I may pick Genoa, who knows. Things just fell my way this year, for that I thank God,” continued Reeves.
Reeves, an Oregon resident, played football for the Fremont St. Joseph Central Catholic Class A state final four qualifiers in 1978. The Streaks were defeated in the semifinals by state runner-up Lorain Clearview, 19-12, and finished the season 8-3.
Following Reeves in this year’s 10-week soothsayer contest is Oregon Mayor Mike Seferian, runner-up at 104-41, followed by defending champion and Genoa Banking Company president Marty Sutter (103-42), Oregon businessman Alan Miller (101-44), Press contributing writer Nick Huenefeld (100-45), former professional football player and local businessman Tim Williams (98-47), and tying for the final spot are Press contributing writers Deb Wallace and Mark Griffin at 93-52.
