Both Genoa soccer teams advance toward regional
The Genoa boys and girls soccer teams were both one game away from the regional tournament heading into the weekend, as was the Oak Harbor girls.

At Lake Community Stadium, the Genoa boys defeated Lake 1-0 in a Division II district semifinal while the Genoa girls defeated Northwood 3-2 on a late goal in a D-III district semifinal at Genoa High School — both games played Wednesday night.

The Genoa boys were to play Lexington at Fremont Ross Saturday for the district title with the winner advancing to play in the regional semifinal on 7 p.m. November 1 at Sandusky High School against the Bay Village-Parma Padua Fransiscan winner.

The Genoa boys had a first round bye, and then defeated Oak Harbor 1-0 in overtime to win a sectional championship. Brad Eppard scored the winning goal 6:25 into the first overtime to lead the Comets over the Rockets.

The Genoa girls were to play Archbold Saturday at Lake for the district championship with the winner to play in the regional semifinal at 7 p.m. on November 2 at Ottawa Hills High School against the Kalida-Lima Central Catholic winner.

In the win over Northwood, Olivia Malcom, Rachael Albright and Erin Schwamberger scored for Genoa while Kayla Kurth and Jessica Grindle each scored for the Rangers. In Northwood’s 2-1 sectional victory over Huron, Grindle had two goals.

The Genoa girls defeated Cardinal Stritch 8-0 and Woodmore 5-3 to win a sectional championship. Against Stritch, Melanie Gregory completed a hat trick scoring three times, Nicole Dominique scored twice, and Albright, Alexis Ortiz, and Nicole Kraemer each scored once. Against Woodmore, Albright scored twice and Gregory, Malcolm, and Schwamberger each scored once. For the Wildcats, Taylor Avers scored twice and Shannon O’Connor added a goal.

The Oak Harbor girls defeated Port Clinton 2-1 in rain and wind during the sectional final at Clyde High School and then downed state-ranked Norwalk 2-0 in the district semifinal. The Rockets played Bellville Clear Fork in the district final Saturday with winner playing the Lima Bath-St. Mary’s winner at 7 p.m. on November 2 in Findlay.


Lake pre-season favorite
The Lake girls basketball team is the pre-season favorite to win the inaugural Northern Buckeye Conference championship, despite the graduation of all-state player, Alan Miller Jewelers Press Player of the Year, and leading scorer Kaysie Brittenham.

In a meeting of NBC basketball coaches Wednesday in Bowling Green, Lake had four first place votes and garnered 59 points, followed by Rossford (52), Otsego (51), Woodmore (38), Genoa (30), Elmwood (25), Eastwood (24), and Fostoria (9).
  

Sports Announcements
Open registration for an indoor golf league at Lake High School has began. Each league session is 10 weeks and limited to 36 total golfers. Cost for the golf league is $150. The league starts on November 6.  Golfers will play world famous courses such as Pebble Beach, St. Andrews and others. There will be an open house on Nov. 3 from 4-7 p.m. at the indoor golf learning center located in the building south of the Lake Football Stadium. The Lake girls’ basketball program is hosting a sixth grade girls basketball league on Sunday afternoons. The league runs for eight weeks with the first week being Dec. 11 and the last week is Feb.12. Cost is $200 per team and each team will play one game per week. There will be certified officials. All teams must consist of players from the same high school district. The program will take the first eight teams to make payment. Eastwood youth basketball will run first and second grade games (eight-feet basket) from Dec. 3-Jan. 7 from noon to 1:30 at the high school gym with a $25 participation fee. Third and fourth graders will be Saturdays starting Feb. 4-Mar. 3 (practices begin in January) from noon to 2 p.m. with a $30 fee.
