Pryzybylski, Phillips inducted into Clay’s athletic hall
Josh Pryzybylski (Class of 1992) and Jim Phillips (2001) were inducted into the Clay Athletic Hall of Fame before Friday night’s football game.

Pryzybylski was named first team All-Great Lakes League two times and first Team All-District once while playing linebacker. During his senior season, he was named Great Lakes League Defensive Player of the Year and earned honorable mention all-state recognition.

As a track athlete, Pryzybylski was named Most Valuable Player his senior year. At the end of his senior year, he was named the James F. O’Brien award winner for his academic and athletic successes. After graduation, he continued his football career at Edinboro University.

In football, Phillips earned honorable mention All-Great Lakes League his junior season and first team All-Great Lakes League his senior year.

Phillips was a standout at third base on the baseball diamond. In his junior and senior baseball seasons, he earned first team All-Great Lakes League recognition. Additionally, he earned first team All-District both years, was named the Player of Year in the GLL his senior season, and was voted onto the first team All-Ohio baseball team. After graduation, he continued his baseball career at Youngstown State University where he was a four-year starter and earned second team All-Horizon League.

Making history
As a volleyball player at Cardinal Stritch Catholic, Alexandra Blazevich, a 2010 graduate, never dreamed that she would be making history when she stepped onto the court as a member of the Lourdes College Grey Wolves first varsity volleyball team.

At Stritch, Blazevich was named First Team All-Toledo Area Athletic Conference and First Team All District. During the first game playing for Lourdes, Alex had several kills and served for six straight points to open a 9-3 lead in the final set. She is a 5-foot-7 sophomore outside hitter/setter.

“It was a big game for us,” Blazevich said. “There were a lot of nerves, but we eventually settled down and played our game. This was a big night for the school. Coach told us the nerves should be gone and to go out and play our game, and that showed. We stepped our game up.”

According to Coach Greg Reitz, “She’s (Alex) a well-rounded player. She’s kind of settling into an outside hitter. She passes the ball well, plays defense well. I think she’s adjusting well to college.”

“I’ve got a lot of support from my family and friends,” said Blazevich. “The past few home games we’ve had tailgate parties before, and the school is really getting into it. You can definitely feel the excitement on the campus. This is so great to be part of the first sports team. It is such a neat thing. The school is so excited.”

Also on the Lourdes team is 6-1 junior middle blocker Andrea Brown, who hails from Northwood and attended Oakland Community College before transferring to Lourdes. At Northwood, Brown was awarded MVP and named First and Second Team All-TAAC.

They are joined by 5-11 sophomore middle hitter Samantha Stainbrook of Gibsonburg, where she played volleyball, basketball, and softball. She earned the Golden Bear Award, Third Year Award, and First Team All League Middle Hitter while playing for the Gibsonburg volleyball team.

In its first season, Lourdes is 9-16 with six regular season matches and the league tournament remaining. (—reprinted with permission from the Cardinal Stritch Catholic High School Alumni Magazine)

Repeat state champions
The Lake equestrian team won a Division 3 state championship last Sunday at WB Ranch in Swanton. Lake scored 86 points to defeat Springfield (27) and McComb (15) in D-3

This year’s Lake equestrian team members are Morgan Collins, Ashley Landers, Ellen Johns, and Alyssa Knierim. Collins rides a quarter horse named Ace, Landers an Appaloosa named Zap, Johns a quarter horse named Bubba, and Knierim a Tennessee Walker named Bristol.

Despite being in the smallest division and with only four riders, Lake had the second most points overall of all three divisions.

“These girls did an awesome job. The other teams have 6 to 15 riders,” said Lake coach Connie Workman.

Of all teams in all three divisions, Lake had the highest score in western showmanship (15) and trail riding (18). In D-3, Lake also had the highest scores in saddle seat showmanship (11), saddle seat pattern (12), saddle seat bareback (5), hunt seat bareback (5), western horsemanship (5), and reining/western riding (8).

In Division 1, a team representing Erie County (72) defeated teams from Anthony Wayne (67) and Defiance (64). In Division 2, Fremont (169) won the state title over Napoleon (39). All of the state champions are District 2 teams, which Lake is a part of.

This season’s District 2 meet was September 18 at the Wood County Fairgrounds in Bowling Green. The show consisted of 80 riders from nine teams with 97 horses showing in 17 classes. Lake was first in Division 3 by defeating runner-up Genoa, 94-13. Eventual state champs Erie County won in D-2 and Fremont won in D-1.

The teams will receive their awards at the annual Ohio Interscholastic Horsemanship Association banquet on November 7 at the Holiday Inn French Quarter in Perrysburg.
