“These girls did an awesome job. The other teams have 6 to 15 riders,” said Lake coach Connie Workman.
Of all teams in all three divisions, Lake had the highest score in western showmanship (15) and trail riding (18). In D-3, Lake also had the highest scores in saddle seat showmanship (11), saddle seat pattern (12), saddle seat bareback (5), hunt seat bareback (5), western horsemanship (5), and reining/western riding (8).
In Division 1, a team representing Erie County (72) defeated teams from Anthony Wayne (67) and Defiance (64). In Division 2, Fremont (169) won the state title over Napoleon (39). All of the state champions are District 2 teams, which Lake is a part of.
This season’s District 2 meet was September 18 at the Wood County Fairgrounds in Bowling Green. The show consisted of 80 riders from nine teams with 97 horses showing in 17 classes. Lake was first in Division 3 by defeating runner-up Genoa, 94-13. Eventual state champs Erie County won in D-2 and Fremont won in D-1.
The teams will receive their awards at the annual Ohio Interscholastic Horsemanship Association banquet on November 7 at the Holiday Inn French Quarter in Perrysburg.
Football stadium makeover During the off season, the Woodmore football stadium had many changes and updates. Since last season, there has been a completely new entrance building built. There, one can buy tickets, grab a snack at the new concession stand, and new bathroom facilities.
The stadium has been improving since 2007 when the new eight-lane, all-weather track was built, replacing the old stone track. The new entrance building also is for Woodmore athletic teams to store equipment. There was also a big improvement to the visitor’s side bleachers.
“I feel that the improvements were very necessary and came out really well,” said senior football player Conner Shirer.
The new improvements were also pleasing to Coach Britton Devier.
“I thought the concession and new restroom’s were a necessity, and the visitor’s stands were a safety issue,” Devier said.
Leading the way for the building of the new entrance was Gateway Framing and Contracting, led by L.J Overmeyer.
“We were able to pay for these improvements thanks to many generous private donations, booster groups, alumni from across the country, and the Personal Improvement funds the school has received,” said David Nevergall, head of CAGE, the organization behind the improvements.
Nevergall also felt the improvements were necessary.
“With these new improvements, fans will feel safer, happier and more comfortable at the games, which will make them want to return.” (—written by Woodmore junior Brad Flick, Woodmore To Window staff writer, reprinted with permission)
