No. 5 ranked Owens back after 18-match streak ends

After losing their 18 match winning streak to No. 4-ranked Parkland College, the No. 5-ranked Owens Community College volleyball team swept Lorain County CC 25-12, 25-14, 25-14 at home in a Ohio Community College Athletic Conference match.

Some of the top contributors include Whitney Hoodlebrink (Eastwood) and Alyssa Meis (Genoa).

In the win over Lorain, Brittany Egbert (Hopewell-Loudon) led the Express with 12 kills, while Julia Haupricht (Central Catholic) had eight kills. Molly Hilfinger (Anthony Wayne) led with 14 assists, while Erin Schatzle (Monroe, Mich.) had 13 assists.

Egbert and Emily Crowell (Rockford Parkway) each had one ace to lead the team, while Ellie Comes (Sylvania Southview) had 13 digs to lead. Alyssa Pelish (Central Catholic) added nine digs, while Haupricht led the team with two assisted blocks.

The Express (24-2, 7-0 OCCAC) took part in the Grand Rapids Invitational over the weekend.

Owens had stretched their winning streak to 18 with a 25-13, 25-21, 25-15 sweep of No. 7-ranked Kirkwood C.C. in the Parkland Invitational. However, No. 12-ranked Parkland College upset the Express 20-25, 19-25, 17-25 in their next match.

In their first match of the evening, Owens defeated John A. Logan College 25-23, 25-19, 25-21. John A. Logan is the 25th ranked team at the NJCAA Div. I level.

In their second match, Owens defeated Rock Valley College 25-10, 25-18, 28-26. Rock Valley is the 10th ranked team in NJCAA Div. III.

The Express set a match high for aces as a team this season with 15. Hilfinger and Haupricht each had four, while Crowell (Parkway/Rockford, Ohio) had 3.

Egbert led the team in kills with 10, while Haupricht had 8. Schatzle led the team in assists with 15, while Hilfinger had 14.

Pelish  led the team in digs with seven, while Hilfinger had six. It was the first time this season that Comes did not lead the team in digs - she finished with four.

Hoodlebrink had one solo block, while Schatzle and Egbert each had one assisted block.

Before the match, Crowell was named the OCCAC Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 18. In two conference matches, she had 15 kills, one ace, two assists, 12 digs and three assisted blocks. Additionally, Crowell's fine play helped the Express move up one spot in the NJCAA Div. II poll to No. 4, which is the highest ranking for the Express volleyball program since Oct. 1, 2002 when the team was No. 3.

In the first match of the Parkland Invite, the Express defeated Kalamazoo Valley CC 25-15, 25-10, 23-25, 25-15. Haupricht had a team-best 14 kills, while Egbert had 12 and Schatzle had 11.

Hilfinger had a team leading 27 assists, while Schatzle had 26. Comes had a team leading four aces and 28 digs. Crowell added two aces, nine kills and 10 digs, while Schatzle also had 10 digs. Egbert and Meis each had two assisted blocks to lead the team.

In the second match, Owens defeated Kellogg CC 25-23, 25-16, 25-22. Egbert led in kills with 10, while Haupricht had eight. Hilfinger had a team-best 20 assists, while Schatzle had 17. Comes, as she has in every match this season, led Owens in digs with 22. Schatzle and Crowell were second with eight digs apiece. Haupricht added two solo blocks and three assisted blocks, while Crowell had three assisted blocks. Hilfinger and Egbert each had one ace.

In a previous match, the Express rolled over OCCAC rival Columbus State Community College 25-21, 25-20, 26-24.

Crowell continued a fine freshman year with a team leading 11 kills, eight digs and two assisted blocks. Haupricht ad seven kills, while Schatzle and Egbert had five kills each.

Schatzle led the team in assists with 19, while Hilfinger had 11.

Comes once again led the team in digs with 20, while Schatzle had 11. Haupricht added six digs, one solo block and five assisted blocks.
