Brumett, Zimmerman at BGSU Bowling Green State University junior golfer Torey Brumett (Cardinal Stritch) helped his team finish fifth in Verona, N.Y. at the 2011 Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Missouri. Brumett shot an 81 on the final day and carded a weekend total of 238.
As a team, the Falcons' score dropped to 310 on Monday after two rounds in the 280s on Sunday. However, the team lost only one place in the standings and finished fifth out of 14 teams after scoring 881 during the event. Their final total beat their 2010 score (903) by 22 strokes.
Unlike Sunday, weather impacted play during Monday's final round. A weather front brought chilly temperatures and steady rain to the Verona, N.Y. area for Labor Day, and the scores showed how rough play was. Twelve of the 14 teams had their worst round of the tournament on Monday, while only two teams shot better than 299.
At BGSU’s annual home tournament, the 11th annual John Piper Intercollegiate, the Falcons won a two-hole playoff to capture the team championship for the third consecutive year. Brummett (238) each played for the Falcons' "Orange" squad.
Last year, Brumett competed in the Piper Intercollegiate, shooting 169 (82-87) to place 71st. He played in three of BGSU's five stroke-play events in the spring and shot a season-best 230 (79-75-76) to tie for 38th at Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational.
Brumett’s best finish of the season took place at Boilermaker Invitational (T-25th) as he shot 231 (76-77-78). His average was 77.3 over the final eight rounds of season, 79.0 in 11 events for the entire season with a low score of 75.
Brumett spent one season at Owens CC, where he shot a 144 (73-71) at the Kyle Roman Memorial. As team captain at Stritch, he earned first-team all-district as a senior and finished 28th at the OHSAA state championships in 2008.
Running cross country at BGSU is junior Ian Zimmerman (Eastwood), who ran in BGSU’s first five races during his debut season. His season-best 8K was at Mel Brodt Invitational (28:41.2) and he also posted a sub-29-minute time at Falcon Invitational (28:50.3). Zimmerman finished the 5K against Toledo in 18:21.
Last season, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA) named the BGSU men’s cross country as an All-Academic team for their efforts during the 2010 season with Zimmerman contributing.
Cami Paulson, who completed her ninth season and final season as men’s cross country head coach in 2010, says she believes strongly in emphasizing a combination of excellence as students and athletes. The Falcons’ cumulative GPA of 3.1 ranked fifth in the Mid-American Conference.
The All-Academic designation was the first that the team has received since the 2001-2002 season, and Paulson viewed it as a culmination of hard work by all of the athletes and as a building block to greater things in the future.
“The men on this team have worked very hard to put themselves in a position to earn All-Academic Team status. Earning this award was one of the team goals for the season,” Paulson said. “I am very proud of the academic accomplishments of the men in the program and their continued progress both in the classroom and in competition. The goal for the future will be to continue to raise the team GPA, as well as competitive expectations.”
