The Lake boys cross country team tied for first with Old Fort after scoring the first five runners and received the runner up trophy at the Norm Bray Invitational run at Walsh Park in Fremont when scoring the sixth place runner from each team.

Lake senior Nathan Adkins finished third overall, Tyler Rickman placed eighth, sophomore Scott Brittenham was 10th, senior Riley Breese 12th, and senior Nathan Scanlan 20th. Sean Harger finished 55th and Bennett Breese 62nd in the varsity race. Sophomore Orfrancis Ozuna was fourth overall in the open race.

In the girls race, the Flyers finished seventh of the seven teams competing and were led by senior Hailee Greenlese in 26th. Sophomore Amber Soncrant finished 27th, senior Tatiana Walters 28th, senior Caitlin Stickler was 38th, and senior Stephanie Hull 39th, junior Angela Santana placed 47th, and sophomore Kathryn Cooper 48th.

For fourth-year coach Ken Mysinger’s Flyer harriers, it will be about defeating Genoa and Eastwood on the boys’ side and finishing in the Northern Buckeye Conference’s upper division on the girls side..

The girls, competing in the first NBC Jamboree, finished in fourth of the seven teams in the conference having runners and fourth of the four teams that fielded a full team. Greenlese was the Flyer’s top finisher followed by Soncrant. Other runners scoring for Lake were freshmen Shelby Zemenski, Alana Smith, and Stickler.

In the boys NBC race, three of Lake’s top runners, in addition to runners from other schools competing, were disqualified for taking a wrong turn. Lake finished in third place of the seven teams, eight points behind Genoa and four points behind Eastwood. Scoring for the Flyers was Adkins who placed fifth overall, followed by Brittenham, junior Dustin Preble, Jake Momany and Bennett Breese.

The last two years, Mysinger’s boys were district runners-up. They finished 12th at the regional meet and second in the Suburban Lakes League championship last year.

Returning letter winners include Adkins, Scanlan, Preble, Brittenham, Ozuna, junior Trevor Walsh, sophomore Ty Basilius, sophomore Nathan Vidra, Riley Breese, and Dakota Jakey.

“We lost one individual from last year’s squad and we hope to continue to improve so that we can take the next step. The team tied Tiffin Columbian at districts last season after scoring the top five runners and received the runner-up trophy after comparing the sixth runner’s place,” Mysinger said.

“Tiffin Columbian wound up fifth at the regional championships, just missing qualifying for state by seven points behind Lima Shawnee, while we had a less than perfect day and finished 12th. The four schools that advanced from our regional finished first, third, sixth, and 12th in the state championships so we know we have our work cut out for us,” Mysinger continued.

“The group is a hardworking group whose success will depend on working to improve our sixth through 12th runners. The younger runners, and a newcomer to cross country, must continue to close the gap with our top guys to reach the lofty goals this group has set for themselves.”

The Lake girls finished sixth of seven teams in the SLL last year. Returning letter winners include Greenlese, Stickler, Hull, Walters, Soncrant, Cooper, Santana, senior Hunter Johnson, juniors Samantha Curavo and Brooke Davies and sophomores Merrishia Lands, Mallory Lee, and  Kaili Powell.

“We have five returning seniors on the team. Success will depend on running as a group and continuing to improve. The seniors must lead by example in order to make the team stronger. Two hardworking freshman and a couple newcomers to cross country must also make a significant contribution in order to continue to improve,” Mysinger said.

Last week, the Lake boys cross defeated Clay and Central in a relay-style format cross country meet. Each individual team was divided into two-person teams with each individual alternating with his partner and running 3-by-1 mile. Lake scored 24 for the win. Clay was second with 26 points and Central had 28.

The boys’ pair of Breese and Ozuna placed third overall and Rickman and Scanlan were fourth just two seconds back. Adkins and Brittenham placed sixth overall and the pair of Dustin Preble and his partner Jake Momany rounded out the scoring by finishing 11th for the win. Also competing were Ty Basilius and Bennett Breese in 15th overall, Nathan Vidra and Sean Harger were 17th, and Trevor Walsh and Matt Sartor 21st.

The girls cross finished in third behind St. Ursula with 17 points, the Clay girls scored 26, and Lake tallied 35 points. Greenlese and her partner finished sixth overall, Alana Smith and her partner were eighth, Santana and her partner 12th, and Caitlin Stickler and Stephanie Hull placed 14th.
