BGSU coach Dave Clawson announced that Zach Akenberger would be the teams co-captain in the Falcon’s first game at Idaho. Akenberger, a 5-8, 194 pound senior running back, played for Lake but finished his prep career at Bowling Green High School.
The Falcons will not feature season captains in 2011, but will elect new captains prior to each game. Akenberger, who suffered a broken leg last season versus Temple, did not play versus Idaho, but traveled with the team.
BGSU opened the season in impressive fashion, defeating Idaho 32-15 in the Kibbie Dome. The Falcons scored 30 unanswered points to lead 30-7 at the half.
Last year, Akenberger played in seven games and had four tackles on special teams. In 2009, he played in all 13 games and finished the season with two kickoff returns for 21 yards. He caught one pass for four yards versus Miami and had 10 total tackles, including four solo. In 2008, Akenberger played in nine games and recorded eight tackles, including two tackles in each game versus Kent State and Buffalo.
His senior year for Coach Jeff Cullen at BGHS, he had 1,083 rushing yards and 131 tackles, was named first team All-NLL running back and linebacker and an honorable mention a ll-state linebacker.
