Screptock, Amenta All-Americans at Junior Olympics Two Lake Erie Wrestling Club grapplers earned All-American status by winning their weight divisions and brining home Gold Medals at the Junior Olympics in New Orleans.
Mike Screptock and Angelo Amenta both finished with 16-0 records, earning Gold. Screptock defeated defending Division I Ohio state champion Brandon Thompson (Solon) and a two-time state champion from Minnesota, Mark Voss. Amenta defeated two-time Pennsylvania state champion, Matt Rappo, and Virginia state champion Michael Sprague.
There were 22 teams representing the United States and Lake Erie’s entry finished in 11th place. The club competed against all-star teams from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, Michigan, Maryland, Indiana, Louisianna, Minnesota, and South Dakota.
Copper medalists from Lake Erie were Richie Screptock and Brian Elden, both finishing with 13-3 records.
Other wrestlers faring well were Luke Cramer (12-4) Aaron Henneman, (11-5), Kyle Patterson, (10-6) and Drew Keenan (9-7). The team record was 11-5 in the dual meet competition tourney. The 2012 Junior Olympics will be held in Texas.
Buckeye Guard The Genoa football and athletic department is joining up with 325 other teams across Ohio to support 3,200 Ohio National Guardsmen being deployed to Afghanistan this year in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Operation Buckeye Guard is “a grass roots movement for Ohio high school football teams to show support for the Ohio Army National Guard.” The team will show their support by wearing decals of the American flag and a unit patch of the 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team on their helmets. The purpose of the movement is to acknowledge the thousands of men and women serving overseas and to recognize the 10-year anniversary of 9/11.
They are also sending care packages to troops overseas. Items that can be sent include beef jerky/Slim Jims, sunflower seeds, peanuts, Smarties or SweetTart candies, chewing gum, Avon Skin So Soft, AA-cell alkaline batteries, disposable razors, toothbrush and toothpaste, pre-paid phone cards, etc. Care packages will be collected at both the north and south entrance gates to Comet Stadium before the Sept. 16 game against Fostoria.
Sports Announcements Three hundred dinners will be available from 4:30 p.m. until sold out in the Lake Middle School cafeteria prior to the Lake-Sylvania Northview football game on September 9. Dinner includes chicken, potato, vegetable, coleslaw, dessert and beverage. Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children under 10. Dinners are prepared by Butch Molnar and Country Catering. Profits will benefit the Lake Athletic Boosters and student athletes.
********* Clay’s Chopper Dropper will be September 23. A helicopter drops hundreds of numbered balls on the football field before the Homecoming football game. First prize is $1,000, second is $500, and third is $250. Balls are on sale for $10 each at all home football games, CHS office (419-693-0665, ext. 2044) or call Larry Kesling at 419-693-9223. Proceeds benefit the Clay High Alumni and Friends and Scholarship Fund.
********* The Dirty Dog 5K Trail Run will be Oct. 29 at Cedar Creeks Preserve, Northwood, starting at 9 a.m. Cost is $7.50 (no t-shirt) or $16 with t-shirt mailed by Oct. 15. Cost is $20 race day without t-shirt, t-shirt will be an additional $10 on race day if available.
