Local broadcasters taking radio to another level

Mark Reeves and Al Singlar started broadcasting local Friday night high school football games via “streaming radio” on their station, WRSCradio.com, in 2009.

Season No. 3, both men believe, will be bigger and better than ever. Reeves and Singlar, who co-own WRSCradio.com, have taken their station to an all-sports talk format. Their station is now called WRSCsports.com and is all sports talk, all the time.

“It took a lot of phone calls and talking to the right people,” Singlar said. “We formed a relationship with The Sporting News Radio. A week after we switched, Yahoo! Sports Radio bought out The Sporting News Radio and everything was good to go. Yahoo! Sports is pretty cool stuff.”

Reeves, who owns Midwest Online Communications LLC, said he and Singlar changed the station's format in July. The station is headquartered in the Woodville Mall, next to the Fox Theater.

“We went to 24/7 sports talk and it's going real well,” Reeves said. “It seems like our numbers are picking up during the day. We were initially getting 6,000 hits a day. Last year we were getting 105,000 hits on Friday nights, people coming onto the website to listen.”

WRSCradio.com's format included high school sports interspersed with music. WRSCsports.com now features only sports.

“Sports is our niche and we've been further developing it,” Reeves said. “By becoming involved with Yahoo! Sports Radio, it's an awesome format. The talk shows are great. They have a newsy angle that you get on the other two big sports networks (ESPN, Fox), but they are down to earth with the stories. It's good stuff.”

WRSCsports.com will broadcast every Friday night football game for four local teams — Lake, Northwood, Whitmer and Southview – and will also do one Regional Game of the Week.

“That one will be one of the better games in the area that night,” Reeves said.

The public can listen to the games online by going to WRSCsports.com and clicking on “listen live.” Pregame shows begin 15-30 minutes before the start of each game.

The station's Friday night play-by-play announcers are Singlar and Shawn Georgeson (Northwood), Ryan Bowen and John Ervin (Lake), Reeves and Bill Boyle (Game of the Week), Chris Schmidbauer and Mason Lowry (Whitmer) and Nate Lowe and Anthony Bellino (Southview).

“We've been the voice of the Northwest Hockey Conference, which for this area is high school hockey,” Reeves said. “We've covered state championships in hockey and all-star games. We are working along with Channel 36 and Channel 24, and we've been affiliated with the Suburban Press and the Metro Press since day one. We're more regional now and we are now 24/7 sports. The coaches seem to all love it. We do coaches' shows for all the schools and we promote all of the sports. It's about promoting the schools and promoting local athletics.”

The Lemoyne Road rivalry, Lake at Northwood, will be one of the featured games broadcast during week two (Sept. 9), along with Clyde at Eastwood. Other games on Sept. 9 include AB Lucas Secondary (Canada) at Whitmer, Sylvania Southview at Rogers, and Central Catholic at Bedford.
