Clay The Eagles, under coach Rob Belegrin, move from the City League to the newly-formed Three Rivers Athletic Conference this season.
Clay returns three lettermen in juniors Nick Breier and Derek Belkofer and sophomore Blake Heilman. Breier is the Eagles' top player and serves as team captain.
“He had a great summer in the TJGA and is looking to put a solid season together,” Belegrin said. “He is a two-year varsity letterman and was honorable mention All-City. Derek Belkofer has a great knack for scoring. He was second-team All-City last year and is a two-year letterman.
“We are looking for a solid season from Blake Heilman. He put tremendous time and effort into his game and he will be the key for us to have a successful season.”
The Eagles' other players are seniors Tyler Brown, Hudson Saban, Adam Elliot and Blaine Davies, and junior Luke Davis.
Cardinal Stritch Coach Jeff Hess will count on three seniors and a junior to lead the way in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference this year.
Junior Alex Demory, who averaged 44 strokes per nine holes, was a second-team all-conference performer in 2010.
“Alex has a very good short game and is very accurate,” Hess said. “Alex is a very good student of the game and he is one of the hardest workers.”
The Cardinals' other top players are seniors Ben Hahn, Shane Goetz and Derek Scott. Hahn averaged 45 shots per nine holes last year while earning honorable mention All-TAAC honors.
“Ben is a hard worker and very dependable,” Hess said. “He will be counted on to be one of the leaders to a young group. Ben is the most experienced player since this is his third year of varsity golf. Ben has a well-rounded game of golf.
“Shane (44 average) is the most consistent player I have. He will be counted on to play as one of my top two players. Shane's game is driven by an excellent short game and his iron play is the tops on the team.”
Scott had a 48 average last year as a junior.
“Derek is a very consistent player and is one of the better putters on the team,” Hess said. “Derek has also done a great job of mentoring to the younger players.”
Northwood The Rangers pretty much have nowhere else to go but up in the TAAC, after placing sixth out of seven teams at last year's conference tournament.
Coach Reese Snyder, in his 15th season, has just two returning starters in juniors Brandon Hoffman and Conan Lutes.
“We're hoping to get them to play around bogey golf and get them to be more consistent,” Snyder said.
Northwood competed at the Royal Invitational in North Baltimore on Monday and shot 431 as a team, which includes sophomores Dennis Danko and Ryan Shumaker.
