Detroit Pistons returning for Owens College youth camp
Owens Community College will offer the Detroit Pistons Youth Basketball Training Camp Tour July 29-30. The youth camp runs from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. each day.

“Owens Community College is pleased to continue its longstanding partnership with the Detroit Pistons organization and once again serve as host to their annual youth basketball training camp,” said Chris Giordano, Owens Dean of Student Life.

Camp instructors for the two-day event will include Detroit Pistons officials and players, Michigan college and high school coaches, and current and former collegiate basketball superstars. The registration fee for the camp is $89 per participant and space is limited. In addition, each individual will receive a Detroit Pistons’ reversible training camp jersey, a basketball and one free ticket to a Pistons home game and courtside pass.

Vintage baseball
The Lutheran Home’s Leapin’ Lizards will play the Black Swamp Frogs in a Civil War Era Baseball Game in conjunction with the First St. John Lutheran Church 150th Anniversary Celebration. The game is 2 p.m. at the Lutheran Home in Oregon. There will be a barbershop quartet from 1:30-2 p.m. and a visit from the Toledo Mud Hens’ Muddy and Muddonna during the game. Call 419-724-1841.

The North Baltimore Cyclones vintage baseball team, managed by Lake graduate Craig Lammers, will be playing at the Old Mansfield Reformatory on July 17. The Cyclones home field is Wintergarden Park in Bowling Green.

Last month, the Cyclones took on the Columbus Buckeyes at Lincoln Park in Marion, Ohio. The field the game was held at, Lincoln Park, is the oldest minor league site in Ohio. Minor League baseball was first played there in 1915. The current grandstand was a WPA project in 1936, and pro ball returned to the city the following season.  Marion was a member of the Ohio State and Ohio-Indiana Leagues from 1944-51, most successfully as a farm team of the Boston Red Sox.

The Cyclones also played in the Mayor's Cup tournament in Upper Sandusky against a team from the Canton area first, followed by the Columbus Capitals and then the Cincinnati Red Stockings. Golf Results
The first annual Ottawa County Open Golf Tournament was held June 25-26. Round one of the 36 hole stroke play championship was held at Oak Harbor Golf Club and round two was held Sunday at Catawba Island Club. The tournament was a joint effort between the two clubs with Ken Williams and Chuck Benes serving as tournament directors.

Open Division champion is Jim Ford, Oak Harbor, and second place is Dave Belden, Catawba Island, and Joey Kurtz, Port Clinton (tie). Low net championship went to Andy Palmer, Oak Harbor. The Senior Division champion is Jim Jacobs, Curtice, and second place went to Joe Bires, Catawba Island. Low net champion is Bires. The Legends Division champion is John Papcun, Port Clinton, second place went to Chuck Casey, Oak Harbor, and low net title went to Casey.

The 13th annual Rally for the Cure golf scramble was held at the Oak Harbor Golf Course on June 22. The top three scoring teams were: first place-Elly Hahn’s team; second place-Carolyn Kauble’s team; and third place-Sue Homsy’s team. $5,390 was raised for Susan G. Komen charities with $3,230 of those dollars remaining in the Northwest Ohio area Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization.


Sports Announcements
Prospective players interested in playing intercollegiate baseball at Owens Community College are invited to open tryouts on July 13 beginning at noon. The Owens baseball program finished the 2011 season with a 25-13 overall record and in second place in the OCCAC (9-5 record). Coached by Del Young, Owens lost to Vincennes University in the NJCAA Sub-Region XII championships. Individuals must register by July 10 to participate in the open tryouts. Prospective Owens Express student-athletes must be high school graduates and must bring a copy of their last physical and should bring their own equipment. The Ohio Regional Training Center will hold a Northwest Ohio Summer Fundraiser to support seven Olympic wrestling hopefuls, including J.D. Bergman (Oak Harbor/Ohio State). Keynote speaker is two-time All-American football player Chris Spielman (Ohio State), now a retired Detroit Lions linebacker and ESPN broadcaster. Emcee is WTOL news broadcaster Jerry Anderson. The fundraiser is Aug. 1 at Hilton Garden Inn, Levis Commons, Perrysburg, with doors open at 6 p.m. and dinner served at 6:45. Cost is $100 per person or $1,000 per table (eight guests). The Maumee Bay Mud Hens will be holding tryouts for a 2012 U9 baseball team. Players must be 9 or younger as of May 1, 2012 and either by Oregon residents or attend Oregon Schools.
