Shrewsbury feelin’ good about making state podium In the Division III boys’ state track meet, Woodmore sophomore Andy Shrewsbury earned a sixth-place finish in the 200 dash. He ran a career-best time of 22.68 in Friday's semis, then clocked in at 22.89 in the finals.
“My goal was just to make the podium,” Shrewsbury said. “I had to have a great block start and maintain my speed and just not give up. My block start felt really good. I was nervous. I was thinking, 'don't get last place.' After that it was like, 'Oh my gosh, a dream come true.' ”
Shrewsbury also ran on Woodmore's 4x200 relay along with seniors Brian Alexander and Cody Curry and freshman Malachi Brown. The Wildcats, who placed fourth at regionals (1:32.44), took ninth at state with a time of 1:32.31. They ran 1:31.83 in the prelims.

“We didn't run what we expected to,” Shrewsbury said. “Our handoffs were good, but I guess nerves kind of got to us. We ran our split times a little bit slower than we did in the prelims, which is why we didn't do as well. We were really happy to get there.”
Northwood senior Zach Bermejo qualified in the 110 hurdles after taking third at the regional meet (15.51). Bermejo was unable to advance to the finals in Columbus, placing eighth (16.31) in his semifinal heat.
Wright’s career-best In the D-II girls meet, Genoa senior Tiffany Wright took fifth in the 800 in 2:15.38, a career best. She was in the top three for the first half of the race but was overtaken down the stretch.
“If there's one thing my coaches taught me throughout the year, it's the race is not won in the first 400 meters,” Wright said. “You win in the last 200 meters. Even at one and a half laps, it doesn't matter what place you're in. You have to kick it in in the last 200 meters. I had that going through my head, so it didn't matter to me that I was in the top three positions through the first lap.
“I knew what it would come down to. At that 600-meter point, that's where it would make a difference. I was running against girls who were doing times of 2:12. They had that extra kick and my extra kick wasn't as good as theirs.”
Wright, who competed at the state meet as a sophomore as a member of Genoa's 4x800 relay, outlasted Chillicothe Zane Trace junior Taylor Hatfield at the finish line for fifth place.
“My goal was definitely to get on the podium,” Wright said. “I was hoping for around fifth place. I was seeded seventh or eighth and I wanted to get around fourth place. I definitely wanted to bring down my time again. I was two places and two seconds off my (regional) time, so I was thrilled.”
Oak Harbor junior Morgan Turnow took sixth place in the discus with a throw of 126-0. She threw 126-03 a week earlier to win the regional title at Lexington.
Eastwood senior Whitney Hoodlebrink just missed the awards stand after taking ninth in the long jump with a leap of 16-05.25.
In the D-III girls meet, Northwood junior Kayla Kurth was unable to make the finals in the 100. A third-place finisher at the Tiffin regional (12.88), Kurth was 11th in the semifinals with a time of 12.79.
Woodmore senior Lacy Nagy, who took second at regionals (11:46.44), finished 16th at the state meet in 12:44.46.
