Northwood’s Coach Russell named Coach of Year
Northwood baseball coach Dave Russell has been named Toledo Area Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.

Northwood has two first team selections in Nick Russell and Cameron Juhasz, while Cardinal Stritch’s Mike Blazevich is also first team. Ottawa Hill’s J.J. Buckey is Player of the Year.

Making second team are Justin Rohrs and John Segura from Northwood and Matt Guy from Stritch. Honorable mention choices are Tyler Johnson and Jake Pressley from Northwood and Tim Langlois and Robbie Bekier from Stritch.

In the final year of competition in the Suburban Lakes League, outfielder Kurt McKee from the championship team Lake is Player of the Year.

Local first team selections are McKee, Genoa senior outfielder Seth Dufendock, Lake junior shortstop Ryan Kohlhofer, Gibsonburg senior catcher Brett Diekman, and Lake junior pitcher Josh Tantari.

Second team picks from Genoa are senior outfielder Garrett Scott, senior first baseman Seth McWatters, and senior pitcher Luke Sutter. Others are Lake senior second baseman Casey Witt, Gibsonburg senior designated hitter/utility player Nick Sneider, and Woodmore senior catcher Jake Zollinger.

Woodmore has six honorable mention picks, including junior pitcher Derek Benner, sophomore third baseman Zach Brossia, senior pitcher David Jacobs, sophomore DH/utility Danny Munoz, junior shortstop Jon Sandwisch, and freshman second baseman Evan Ulinski.

Eastwood has five honorable mention choices, including sophomore catcher Zach Coffield, sophomore shortstop Skylar Dierker, senior pitcher Justin Faykosh, freshman second baseman Ryan Mang, and senior third baseman Johnny Zellers.

Lake and Gibsonburg each had three HM choices, including (Lake) junior outfielder Corey Hotmer, junior pitcher Nathan Scanlan, senior outfielder R.J. Schultz, (Gibsonburg) junior shortstop Gage Beaber, freshman outfielder Andrew Cantrell, and senior DH/utility Vincent Kirsch. From Genoa making HM are junior catcher Jarrod Adkins and senior outfielder Matt Murphy.

In the Sandusky Bay Conference, Oak Harbor senior infielder Josh Warnke and sophomore outfielder A.J. Cecil are two of only three unanimous first team selections in the league. The other is Perkins sophomore pitcher Cameron Waldock, who is the SBC Outstanding Performer award winner.

Second team selections from Oak Harbor are sophomore pitcher Mark Konieczny and junior infielder Phil Bryant. Making HM is D.J. Everett, Joey Mallernee, Brian Mallernee, and Jake Scott.


Softball all-league
Lake finished behind champion Elmwood in SLL softball, but the Flyers had three first team choices in senior outfielder Kaysie Brittenham, senior second baseman Adrienne Lowe, and junior third baseman Megan Schnell. Elmwood senior pitcher Marissa Lee is Player of the Year.

Other local first team picks are Genoa senior outfielder Harless Hummel, Woodmore senior DH/utility Bailey Ulinski, and Eastwood senior pitcher Christine Foster.

Second team selections are Genoa senior outfielder Julie Swartzmiller, Woodmore senior outfielder Jessica Johnson, Lake senior first baseman McKenzie Whiteman, Lake sophomore shortstop Kahla Encalado, Eastwood freshman third baseman Cassidy Rolf, Gibsonburg freshman DH/utility Filomena Mendoza, Genoa senior catcher Olivia Reeder, Lake senior pitcher Lauren Densic, and Woodmore freshman pitcher Madeline Phillips.

Eastwood HM choices are sophomore catcher Diana Bushman, so;phomore DH/utility Whitney Foster, sophomore outfielder Ally Gabel, junior shortstop Hannah Hirzel, senior first baseman Amanda Selhorst, and junior outfielder Saige Smith.

Gibsonburg HM picks are senior catcher Katie DuShane, sophomore third baseman Danielle Fisher, senior DH/utility Taylor Henline, senior outfielder Karri Kreilick, junior first baseman Meredith Morgan, and junior outfielder Brittany Potts.

Also making HM are Genoa sophomore pitcher Mackenzie Hoyles, senior outfielder Rachel Johnson, senior third baseman Hannah Morrison, senior shortstop Kayla Pickard; Lake junior outfielder Hallie Adair, senior outfielder Hillary West; Woodmore freshman first baseman Courtney Clowers and junior shortstop Kalyn Tate.

In TAAC softball, from co-champions Northwood are three first team choices in Sammie Brisbin, Cindy Szyperski, and Jordan Edwards. Stritch first teamers are Alex Veres and Katie Turski. From co-champions Ottawa Hills, Paul Komisarek is COY and Natalie Temme is POY.

Local second team choices from Northwood are Nancy Rumpf, Katie Vanes, and Becca Gwin, and from Stritch are Emily Lorton, Melissa Cobb, and Rachel Esposito. TAAC HM are Heather Derr and Brianna Crispen from Northwood and Alyssa Wlodarz and Sara Inderrieden from Stritch.

Oak Harbor had one first team pick in SBC softball — junior designated player Logan Bahnsen. Edison junior pitcher Susan Knight is the league’s outstanding player. Senior shortstop Julia Konieczny is the Rocket’s lone second team choice, and Dayna Setzler and Samantha Durivage are HM.


Go the Distance
Runners, ages 12 and older including adults, can participate in the Go the Distance Running School June 20-24.  The school will be held at a different Toledo Metropark each day from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The staff includes several of Ohio’s top road racers with Olympic Trials credentials: Bob Masters, Deb Wagner, and Keith Madaras.  Guest speakers include area runners with All-American and Olympic Trials credentials as well as international racing experience.
