Mike Wright, owner of Ace Roofing & Construction Inc., probably has a lot of fishing stories of his own.
Now he's looking for someone to make their own memories – and get paid for it at the same time.
Ace Roofing, along with owners Jason Martin and Mike Free of Reno Beach Bait Shop on Route 2 in Curtice, are co-sponsoring the Ace Roofing and Construction Fishing Tournament. There is no registration fee. The object: haul in the longest fish and earn $500 for top prize. Second place is $200 and third place earns $100.
The tournament began last month and runs through Sept. 30.
Wright said the fishing tournament is Ace Roofing's way of giving back to the community. This is the third year he has sponsored a fishing tournament.
“Were busy,” he said, “and 80 percent of what we get is from referrals. When everybody else is slow, we're busy because of the referrals. If you do a good job, the people come back year after year. This is a thank you to the community for the hundreds and hundreds of roofs we've done.”
Anglers can turn in any fish they choose, as long as it is legal, according to Wright.
“The reason why we're doing it wide open, with no fees or anything, is we enjoy fishing and we know a lot of of people can't get on a boat into the lake. They can fish out by Davis-Besse and bring in the biggest carp. Most tournaments have fees, and the company gets a kickback on the fee and they're making money on you.
“Any legally caught fish, bring it in and we'll measure it and the longest one by Sept. 30 wins a prize.”
