Bergman honored as Toledo’s Wrestling Coach of Year At the April 26 Benton-Carroll-Salem Schools regular board meeting, Athletic Directory Drew Grahl recognized student athletes participating in State competitions for the winter season and were presented with board commendations.
Wrestling coach George Bergman was recognized for the Oak Harbor team finishing third in the state, Division II, and Bergman also being named 2011 Greater Toledo Area Wrestling Coach of the Year.
Commendations were awarded to Tyler Hackworth, state wrestling champion, Konnor Witt, state runner-up, Ian Miller, state runner-Up, Jake Cramer, State runner-up, Alex Bergman, state sixth place finisher, Sean McGee state qualifier,
Also recognized was state swimming qualifiers Danielle Franck, Marlee Carpenter, Bethany McNutt. and Allie Dombrowsky.
Haynes heads to Owens Waite senior basketball player Miriah Haynes has signed to play for Owens Community College next season.
The 5-10 guard was named First Team All-City League, Second Team All-District and team Co-MVP her senior year. She also participated in the Ohio-Indiana All-Star and the BCSN All-Star Games.
Haynes began last school year at Chipola College in Florida before changing her mind and coming home after a few weeks. She joins a 10-person recruiting class for the Express next year.
Non-lead sinkers Free samples of non-lead sinkers for fishing will be available at a lead sinker collection day at Duricek Automotive, 700 Dixie Hwy. Rossford, on May 1 from 1 to 4 p.m. and at the University of Toledo Lake Erie Center at 6200 Bayshore Rd., Oregon, on May 5 from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Austin Taylor, of Gibsonburg, is working on his Eagle Scout project with the UT Lake Erie Center and fellow boy scouts leading the effort to let the public know the danger of lead sinkers.
“We all know the dangers of lead to humans, but did you know it has an effect on wildlife and our water supply?,” Taylor’s e-mail to The Press states. “My project is to inform others about the dangers of lead sinkers, as they kill more than 1.5 million waterfowl per year in North America. There are many alternatives to lead such as tungsten, steel bismuth, alloy, and tin sinkers.”
‘The Dory Crew’ A group of women who call themselves “The Dory Crew” are hosting a just for fun Euchre Tournament at Eastwood High School’s Eagle’s Nest on May 7 at 7 p.m. to raise funds for Serenity Farm, a non-profit agency located on Lemoyne Road.
Serenity Farm provides therapeutic horseback riding services for children and adults of all abilities, do school visits, and many other programs. A silent auction and free will bake sale will also be held during the tournament for the non-card players among us. Registration is a $5 per person or $10 per two-person team donation.

********** The Owens Community College women's basketball program will be hosting the 2011 High School Varsity Summer Shoot-Out on June 17-18. The cost is $250 for one day and $300 for both. In addition, there is a four game guarantee for one day participation, leading to an eight game guarantee for two-day participants.
