The motto of Kim’s Tae Kwon Do Academy is “pilsung,” which is the Korean word for victorious, and three local students responded.

Kim’s sent three students to the AAU Ohio state championship tournament in Columbus earlier this month, and the students, who hail from Genoa and Graytown, came home with four gold medals and one bronze.

Miranda Whiteman, an orange belt who has only been in the sport for eight months, competed in her first tournament and won gold in patterns. Jaylen Venson, a bronze belt, placed gold in sparring and bronze in patterns.

Tre Mettie placed gold at the state tournament in patterns and sparring for the second year. Mettie also won a bronze title at the national championships in Fort Lauderdale in 2010.

All three students, by placing gold, have earned a spot in this year’s national tournament in Austin, Texas at the end of June.

Tre, Miranda, and Jalen have had the opportunity to be trained and coached under two national champions — Angel Whiteman, who is Miranda’s older sister and Tre’s mentor, and Master S. Kim, who is the head instructor at the academy. The academy is located at 4351 Monroe Street, Toledo.
