Owens Community College made its 2011 season debut by hosting its annual Owens Invitational April 1 at Belmont Country Club. Teams competing were Lourdes College, Mott Community College, Jackson Community College and Oakland Community College.

Owens finished fourth with 329 strokes to open the season 1-3. Mott won with 308, followed by Jackson (310), Oakland (311), and Lourdes (364) finished fifth. Mott golfer Jake Worthington was medalist after shooting 75 and winning a playoff.

Local first-year players include Louis Fahrbach of Northwood (Northwood) and Kyle Simmons of Millbury (Genoa). Simmons shot an 82 at the Owens Invite.

The Owens golf program has two players returning from last year’s team, including Brooks Gardner (Bowling Green) and Lee Schmidlin (Whitmer).

Gardner, now a sophomore, earned Second Team OCCAC All-Conference honors and compiled an 82.7 scoring average last year. He also was an OCCAC Academic All-Conference selection. Gardner shot an 83 at the Owens Invite last week.

Schmidlin is a sophomore and compiled an 88.1 scoring average for the Express last year. His postseason honors included OCCAC Academic All-Conference recognition. Schmidlin shot an 82 at the Owens Invite.

Owens’ golf program is guided by fifth-year coach Gil Guerrero. The Express captured one match and invitational title during the 2010 season, highlighted by a second-place finish in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) Championship Invitational. The program also finished second in the NJCAA Region XII Sub-Regional Championship after rounds of 333-307 (640) at Belmont Country Club. Additionally, Owens placed seventh in the NJCAA Region XII Golf Championship.

“Our golf team is extremely young with only two veterans returning from last year,” stated Guerrero. “However, I am really excited about this year’s group of student-athletes as they extremely hard workers. Each individual is very unselfish and willing to do whatever it takes for the team to succeed. I expect improvement to occur throughout the season and to compete for the conference title.”

Other first-year players are Kyle Anderson (Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central, Mich.), Brian Brumenshenkel (Anthony Wayne), Greg Hermes (Maumee), Kevin Hoyle (Anthony Wayne), and Casey Lawless (Patrick Fogarty Secondary School, Orillia, Canada). Hermes shot a 77 and Brumenshenkel an 82 at the Owens Invite.
