Coaches Anthony, Bergman chosen Coaches of Year
Clay wrestling coach Gerry Anthony and Oak Harbor coach George Bergman have been selected as the Alan Miller Jewelers Co-Coaches of the Year by The Press.

Bergman is a well-known veteran coach with an impressive resume, and his Rockets followed suit this year by getting four wrestlers into the Division II state championship match and finishing third as a team.

Clay sent four wrestlers qualify for state, and three juniors placed. All four will return next year with the opportunity to place even higher. Angelo Amenta (47-9), the son of former Waite coach and current Clay assistant Carmen Amenta, finished third at 130; Mike Screptock (38-8) finished fourth at 112; and Garrett Gray (39-11) finished sixth at 285. Freshman Jared Davis (29-7) went two and out in his two state matches at 103.

Anthony’s eighth-ranked Eagles won their third City League tournament, scoring 285½ points and crowning eight individual champions. Anthony is trying to build a perennial wrestling power at Clay, and so far he is succeeding.

“The word is, ‘Reload,’” Anthony said. “That’s our goal all along is just not to be a one-time program, to last and every year be consistent. Having the depth in our program, that’s really key.”

The Eagles went on to win its own Division I sectional by scoring 267 points to outdistance Perrysburg (178½). Whitmer (140) was third, followed by St. Francis DeSales (124½), Springfield (119), Anthony Wayne (96 ½), Sylvania Northview (91½), Southview (77½), and St. John’s Jesuit (64½).

Eight Clay wrestlers won sectional titles, and any wrestler that wins a league, sectional, or district title or qualifies for state earns a spot on the Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press Wrestling Honor Roll and receives a certificate.

At Lorain’s district tournament, Clay finished fourth, scoring 110 points, to finish behind national power Lakewood St. Edward (265½), Wadsworth (223), and Brecksville (130).

“I really like that it’s close to home. They’re also very good in soccer and have what I want to major in,” explained Wolfe. (written by Woodmore junior Jake Zollinger from student publication Window to Woodmore)

Genoa soccer player Tiffany Wright will play collegiately at Mount Vernon Nazarene University. A right defender and four-year lettermen, who started every game since her freshman season, contributed to a team that had the most shutouts and wins her senior year and as a freshman, her team qualified for the regional tournament.

This fall, Wright was first team All-SLL, SLL Academic All-League, and was an Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press First Team Defenseman. As a junior, she was first team All-SLL. Her sophomore season she was second team All-SLL and second team All-MSSL. As a freshman, she was honorable mention All-District NWOSSCA and honorable mention All-MSSL.

“Mount Vernon not only has a beautiful campus, but also the Christian environment which I hoped to find at the college I chose to attend,” Wright said. “I found the people very friendly, and I can’t deny that the women’s soccer program was a major influence. I love everything about MVNU and know that it is the place God has called me to be to further my education.”
