Oak Harbor sends six wrestlers to state tournament For the ninth time in school history, the Oak Harbor High School wrestling team was crowned Division II district champions at Marion Harding High School.
Oak Harbor qualified 12 wrestlers into the districts and all 12 scored points for the team. Oak Harbor had six of their wrestlers qualify for the state tournament held over the weekend. Tyler Hackworth, Alex Bergman, Ian Miller, Konner Witt, Jake Cramer, and Sean McGee will all made the road trip to state.
At the district, Oak Harbor outgained its second place opponents by 17½ points. Each wrestler contributed with at least one win, and some came up big with pins.
Four wrestlers would reach the championship finals and compete for individual district titles. Tyler Hackworth punched his ticket to state by winning a title in the 125 weight class by defeating a Lima Shawnee wrestler.
At 152, Ian Miller continued his winning ways by tech falling his opponent from Medina Highland in the finals. In his three matches leading up to the finals, Miller pinned each opponent. Miller was 48-0 on the season heading to the state meet.

Konner Witt came up big in the finals with a pin over Tony Martin (Central Catholic). Witt beat Martin the week prior by a narrow margin in the sectional finals. Jake Cramer came up short, settling for second at the hands of Nick McCall from Wauseon.
Two other Rocket wrestlers would do things the hard way at the district meet. In wrestling, the go-to match to state is one of the most intense and heart wrenching situations any wrestler could be in. Alex Bergman found himself there for the third year in a row, but this time the results were different. With two seconds left in regulation Bergman earned an escape and the deciding point to finally clear that hurdle.
Sean McGee's weekend looked bleak after his first match. He lost in the first round by a point only to win his next five in a row and finish third, qualifying him for a trip to Columbus at the state tournament.
Hunter Gresh was the only other Oak Harbor wrestler in the go-to state match, but came up short, dropping that match and finishing sixth.
In D-I, Clay sent four wrestlers 103 pound weight class freshman Jared Davis (29-5), 112 junior Mike Screptock (35-6), 130 junior Angelo Amenta (42-8), and 285 junior Garrett Gray (36-8).
In D-III, Genoa sent 119 freshman Max Reeder (32-13) and undefeated 152 junior Felipe Martinez (15-0), while Woodmore sent 103 freshman wrestler Evan Ulinski (39-1).
Clay District champ The Clay gymnastics team won the district championship at the Perrysburg Gymnastics Center and qualified for the state tournament at Hilliard Bradley High School in suburban Columbus.
Clay scored 135.95 points at district to defeat runner-up Findlay (135.775). Following, in order, were Perrysburg (133.95), Patrick Henry (132.475), Maumee (130.3), Tinora (130.175), Sylvania Southview (124.45), Liberty Center (120.625), Whitmer (118.275), Sylvania Northview (114.75), Notre Dame (102.325), Bryan (86.75), Defiance (65.425), Springfield (64.975), Napoleon (35.275), Pettisville (34.475), Toledo Christian (32.95), and Central Catholic (31.45).
Clay scores were Kylee Ault (9.325, vault; 8.8, bars; 8.9, beam; 9.25, floor; 36.275, all around); Emilie Roman (8.85, 8.0, 8.4, 8.7, 33.95); Jody Demeo (8.275, 8.0, 8.425, 8.725, 33.425); Amtheyst Floyd (7.85, 7.225, 8.0, 8.7, 31.875); Sydney McGath (7.0, 5.6, 6.45, 6.625, 25.675), and Erin Gyurke (7.4, bars; 8.25, beam).
Ault placed first in the all around competition and the floor exercises, third in the vault and bars, and fourth on the beam. Ault, Demeo, and Roman were named to the all-district team. Clay coaches are Jessica Reitz and Nick Distel.
Achter resigns Clay High School head girls basketball coach Roger Achter has announced his resignation. Achter became head coach in 1995.
In his 16 years at the helm, Achter guided the Lady Eagles to three Great Lakes League titles, earning Coach of the Year each time. His career record at Clay stands at 165-166. He mentored 37 athletes who garnered All- League recognition.
“I want to thank Roger for his many contributions to the Clay High School Athletic Department. He is a tireless worker, a fine basketball coach, and more importantly a good man,” said Clay athletic director Mike Donnelly. “I wish Roger the best of luck in his future endeavors.”
Roller to state Eastwood senior Brandi Roller participated in the prep state bowling tournament as an individual participant at Wayne Webb's Columbus Bowl over the weekend. At the district meet, she rolled a 199-169-220 — 558 to qualify.
Sports Announcements The Lake Township Softball Association will hold sign-ups at St. Peter’s Church in Millbury for 8U, 10U, 12U, and 14U on Mar. 5 and Mar. 12 from 12-2p.m. Fees are $50 for 8U and $80 for 10U, 12U, and 14U.
********* Toledo Raiders semi-pro football organization will hold player combine/tryouts Mar. 13 from 4-6 p.m. with registration starting at 3:30 p.m. at Gold Medal Indoor Sports, 10020 South Compass Drive, Perrysburg. The combine is free and participants must be at least 18-years-old. Participants will be tested in the 40-yard dash, standing broad jump, vertical jump, pro-agility shuffle, and bench press.
