Swimmers, divers continue march towards state

The Press coverage area is well represented at this week's district swimming and diving meets at Bowling Green State University.

Clay will be represented by five individuals and two girls relay teams at the Division I meet, while Lake, Genoa and Eastwood will be represented in Division II.

Dylan Szegedi, an Oregon native and a senior at St. Francis de Sales, is perhaps the area's best hope for a state championship. Szegedi, a diver who placed 11th at last year's Division I state meet in Canton, won a sectional diving title last week at Fremont Ross. Szegedi scored 481.50 points.

“He should be in the top five in the state this year,” said Szegedi's diving coach, Scott TenEyck. “He's currently seeded third (at districts). He should do well because of his maturity, his strength and just the fact that this is his fourth year and his experience has come into play and everything is jelling this year.

“Last year he decided he wanted to dive in college, so his focus changed. It became more intense and he's throwing harder dives. He's jumping higher and getting into the water cleaner. Just the overall quality in the difficulty of his dives has improved immensely.”

TenEyck also coaches two other local divers – Genoa sophomore Bailey Dipman and Lake junior Samantha TenEyck – who qualified to this week's district meet.

Dipman, a second-year diver, won the sectional at Ross by scoring 396.7 points. TenEyck finished second with 391.5.

“The whole regimen I've put the kids through is harder and more intense,” coach TenEyck said. “Bailey's confidence has grown immensely. She seems more relaxed when we get to bigger meets. This year she seems like she's settled in more and she's more relaxed. A lot of kids will dive well in practice and then get in front of people and get nervous. She's diving more like she's at practice.

“Sam's focus is there. We've beefed up her (diving) list a little bit. She's gotten into a groove and a comfort zone with the way her list is being thrown. Her confidence is there. Both girls are just more mature and more confident. Last year was her first year competing, so she and Bailey have more experience under their belt. They push each other. They're both good friends, but once they get into that arena, it's about who's going to score better.”

Clay junior Paige Ozanski and sophomore Natalie Repeta qualified to the district meet in two events each. Ozanski will swim in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley, while Repeta will compete in the 500 freestyle and 200 IM.

Clay's Summer Dwyer will swim the 100 butterfly, while fellow sophomore Megan Siford qualified in diving. The Eagles' 200 free relay and 200 medley relay teams also qualified.

Clay sophomore Christoffer Likens qualified in the boys' 500 free and 100 backstroke.

Two Lake sophomores, Adriana Cannon and Hunter Bell, are competing in D-II. Cannon qualified in the butterfly and IM, while Bell qualified in the 100 free and breaststroke. Nathan Overly, a sophomore at Genoa, will also compete in the IM.

Eastwood juniors Tori Nabors and Nathan Decker earned district qualifying spots. Nabors will swim the 500 free and IM, while Decker will compete in the 500 free and butterfly. Decker was the sectional runner-up in the 500 free.

The Oak Harbor girls were fifth at the sectional swimming and diving competition held in Fremont.

The following Oak Harbor High School swimming and diving team members qualified for the district swimming and diving competition at Bowling Green State University:  Bethany McNutt, Danielle Franck, Marlee Carpenter, Allie Dombrowsky, Lindsay Cochran, Elyse Hablitzal, Megan Wistinhausen, Kaylie Hallett-Szymanski, Katelyn Tice, Ian Rhoades, Tyler Schmidt, Michael Cervantes, Ayron Weigand, Eli Boldt, and Devon Griffin.

Ian Rhoades, a sophomore, won the 500 freestyle at the sectional, finishing in 5:20.34, over six seconds ahead of Sandusky St. Mary Central Catholic sophomore Trevor Durnwald (5:26.07). Devon Griffin will represent the school in diving while the rest of the qualifiers will compete in swimming.

The Oak Harbor girls finished fifth with 296 points in the 13-team field, trailing Fremont Ross (558), Perkins (524½), Sandusky (506), and Port Clinton (479½).
