No program in the Sandusky Bay Area Bowling Conference has ever had the kind of performance like the one turned in by Eastwood's boys and girls teams on Jan. 8.
The Eagles competed against 11 other teams at the SBABC's annual tournament, which was held in Sandusky, and walked away with a clean sweep. Eastwood earned first-place finishes in the varsity boys and girls events as well as the junior varsity boys and girls events.
“It was pretty cool,” Eastwood coach Jay Young said. “I don't want to sound like I'm bragging, but I wasn't surprised because I think we're pretty good. We've got a pretty good program that we feel improves our athletes very well, and we're always competitive.”
The SBABC consists of Eastwood, Gibsonburg, Woodmore, Clyde, Port Clinton, Fremont Ross, Huron, Norwalk, Fremont St. Joe, Perkins, Sandusky and Willard.

Eastwood's five-man boys’ team knocked down 3,747 pins at the SBABC tournament, with Ross coming in second with 3,713. Sophomore Jared Haas led the Eagles with a 626-pin total for three games to earn first-team all-tournament honors.
Teammate Tom Blanchard, a junior, also earned first-team honors with a 596 series followed by senior John Przybylski (528) and freshman Kyle Waynick (522). Junior Derek Rucki had a 311 total for two games and senior Keith Brandt bowled a 196 for one game.
“Jared Haas just bowled great that day,” Young said. “He's one of the best sophomores in the league. Przybylski and Blanchard are kind of our aces. They're No. 1 and No. 3 in the league right now and the top bowlers in our league. Przybylski had an off day, but Haas picked it up. Blanchard and Przybylski are probably the best four-five punch in the state of Ohio.”
Przybylski is carrying a 216 season average for the Eagles, who are 9-2 overall and 7-1 in the conference. Blanchard has a 210 average followed by Haas (197), Waynick (194), Rucki (194) and Brandt (176).
Eastwood's boys have won six straight conference titles and two of the last three SBABC tournament titles.
“This is one of the better teams I've had,” Young said. “They have the potential to be the best team I've had, but they still have a little work to do.”
Eastwood's girls’ team, which won the 2009 state championship, bowled a 3,232 at the SBABC tournament to beat runner-up Sandusky by 260 pins. The Eagles have won three conference titles and four SBABC tournament titles in the last four years.
Senior Brandi Roller and sophomore Jessica Young earned first-team all-tournament honors by bowling a 556 and 517 series, respectively. The Eagles' other scorers were juniors Emily Elston (469) and Harley Vought (457) and freshman Hannah Cook (412).
Eastwood is 9-0 overall and 7-0 in the SBABC.
“We're pretty good,” Young said. “The girls have good mechanics, they work hard and they pay attention and listen. It's a good group.”
Eastwood's jayvee boys team finished with 3,008 pins, just ahead of second-place Port Clinton's 2,982 total.
The Eagles were led by junior John Fredricks, who had a 586 series, followed by sophomore Jared Melchar (484), junior Zach Cross (441), German exchange student Johannas Nell (422) and junior Justin Russell (362).
Eastwood's jayvee girls had a 2,413-pin total to earn first place ahead of Norwalk, which finished with 2,212.
Junior Libby Snyder led the Eagles with a 530 series followed by senior Sarah Knott (386) and juniors Lyndsay Tennison (342), Diana Drgnova (300) and Cynthia Gallo (291).
“We're just real proud of the kids, to not only win the varsity boys and girls but to win the jayvee boys and girls,” Young said. “That says how hard they have worked all year. To win an entire conference tournament is pretty cool.”
