Kate Wegert, Woodmore’s all-star goalkeeper in 2009, has continued her soccer career at Trine University.
The average goalie is considered successful with a 70 percent save ratio. At Woodmore, Wegert blew that statistic out of the water with a 93 percent save ratio. She currently holds the Woodmore school record with 129 saves. Last year, she was awarded the team’s MVP in recognition of her outstanding skills. In her high school career, she was also awarded 2009 captain, team MVP, first team All-Midland Suburban Soccer League goalkeeper, second team All-Suburban Lakes League keeper, and in 2008 was All-MSSL honorable mention.
Currently attending Trine as a criminal justice major, Wegert continues as the starting keeper.
“It’s truly an honor to be a starter at the collegiate level, especially as a freshman,” replied Wegert.
The small school atmosphere was a bonus for Wegert along with being recruited by head coach Terry Stefankiewicz, which led to her decision to go to Trine.
Trine’s record in 2009 was 0-18 — a difficult season. Their record in 2010 was 3-14-1, 0-8 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, already a good improvement.
“Kate’s been a huge asset to the team this year. She’s a decisive goalie and keeps order in the backfield,” says Coach Stefankiewicz.
Wegert started 14 of 17 games, giving up 46 goals and obtaining a 2.67 goals against average. She had 125 saves, a .731 save percentage, and faced 277 shots.
Juggling school work and soccer is no easy feat, but Wegert says she enjoys the challenge. In facts, she adds on to it. Wegert also participates in Trine’s handgun club through the criminal justice program.
Samantha Netz (Lake), a psychology major, was a sophomore midfielder for Trine this season.
