Wrestler Richie Urias off to solid start at Heidelberg
Former Clay wrestler Richie Urias is off to a solid start in his freshman season at Heidelberg. Urias took home sixth place by winning a decision and a major decision at 125 pounds in the annual Ohio Northern Invitational.

In his first collegiate bout, Urias registered a major decision at 125 in his first collegiate bout to get things started for the Berg in a 21-17 victory over Wisconsin-Whitewater. Urias defeated Jedd Wilson, 14-2. In a 35-9 win over Manchester, Urias won a technical fall over Jared Snyder, 19-4.

Urias joins Clay graduate Justin Wharton, a sophomore who wrestles at 165 for Heidelberg. As a freshman, Wharton was 9-8 with a 5-2 divisional record

Heidelberg, under the guidance of Coach Nathan Shearer, has been ranked 27th in the Brute-Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III preseason poll.

The Student Princes are five-time defending OAC tournament champions and have won three of the last five OAC dual championships (2006, 2008, and 2009). Heidelberg has not finished lower than third in OAC dual standings since 2002. Shearer steps in as the 12th head coach in the program’s history. Shearer assisted last year’s head coach, Jason Miller in bringing Heidelberg to the top of the OAC.

Playing basketball for Heidelberg is two recent high school graduates — Nicole Lamb (Cardinal Stritch) and Lee Renner (Gibsonburg).

Lamb, a 5-foot-4 guard, has played in seven games and is averaging 15.9 minutes per game. She is averaging 3.6 points, 1.7 steals, has four blocked shots, and made 8-of-11 free throws. The Berg is 0-6 and 0-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

At Stritch, Lamb received TAAC Player of the Year and First Team All-TAAC and Second Team All-District 7 and Second Team Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press. She helped the Cardinals become TAAC Champions in 2007 and 2008.

Renner, a 6-0, 170 pound guard, has played in six games averaging 4.5 minutes per game and 1.3 points. He has three rebounds and two assists. The men’s team is 3-4.

At Gibsonburg, Renner received First Team All-Suburban Lakes League, First Team All-District, Third Team Northwest Ohio, won the team’s MVP, Super Sophomore and most improved awards, and earned All Academic team three years in a row.

Eli’s sophomore year
Bowling Green State University 5-9 guard Simone Eli (Genoa) is entering her sophomore season with the NCAA Division I Falcons. She has played in seven games and has two rebounds and an assist.

The Falcons' 10-1 record marks the best start in school history. Coach Curt Miller's 2005-06 team began the year with a 9-1 mark, but lost the season's 11th game, in overtime at Kentucky.

As a freshman, Eli played in 13 games off the bench, averaging 0.5 points and 0.3 rebounds. She played in two of the Falcons' three MAC tournament wins in Cleveland. In her two minutes of work vs. Miami in the quarterfinal round had three points and a rebound, hitting a three-point field goal in that game.

In playing four minutes against Appalachian State, Eli scored her first three points as a collegian by hitting a left-corner three-pointer on her first possession after checking into the game and she also picked up her first steal.

At Genoa, Eli was an All-Ohio Second-Team selection for the Comets as a senior. She was named the Northwest District's co-Player of the Year in Division III and also was the Suburban Lakes League POY, helping the team to two SLL titles and two second-place finishes during her four years.

Eli averaged 20.6 points, 4.6 assists and 2.8 steals as a senior, scored over 1,000 career points for the Comets and finished her career with a program-record 176 three-pointers. She averaged 18 points per game as a junior, 13 as a sophomore and nine as a freshman. She was the MVP of the Division III/IV Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association All-Star game after scoring 24 points in her North team's 84-83 win.
