Northwood’s Emma Romstadt leads St. Ursula to title In its seventh trip to the OHSAA state volleyball tournament since 2000, second-ranked St. Ursula claimed its second state title, winning the Division I state championship, 3-1 (15-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-18) over third-ranked Dublin Coffman at Wright State University’s Ervin. J. Nutter Center.
Emma Romstadt, a 5-foot-7 junior defensive specialist from Northwood who played in all four games, led the team with 14 digs in the championship match.
St Ursula (28-1) also won it all in 2004, while Coffman (27-2) takes home the runner-up trophy for the second-consecutive year.
Coffman had a fast start, winning the first set by 10 points behind 20 kills and only two attack errors. But St. Ursula took control soon thereafter and won the pivotal third set, which included 13 ties or lead changes.
In the state semifinal, SUA defeated Brecskville-Broadview Heights (22-8) in straight games 25-20, 25-13, 25-13. Romstadt had nine digs and a service ace.
After defeating Sylvania Southview to win a Division I district semifinal, St. Ursula went on to defeat Central Catholic in the district final 25-16, 25-15, 25-20 and then Amherst Steele (24-1) and Rocky River Magnificat (17-9) in the regional tournament held at Norwalk. Both SUA regional wins were in straight games.
Romstadt was not the only local player competing at the state tourney. Genoa resident Mackenzie Harder is a non-starter for Toledo Christian, which lost to Sidney Lehman Catholic 25-17, 25-15, 25-18 in the Division IV state semifinal. Harder, who played in two games, was a perfect 1-for-1 in attacks, getting a kill. TC, the Toledo Area Athletic Conference champion, finished 22-6.
