The Owens Community College women’s volleyball team will look to advance to their seventh national tournament as the Express compete in the NJCAA Region XII Women’s Championship this weekend. The tournament will be held at Grand Rapids Community College in Grand Rapids, Mich., Friday-Sunday, Nov. 5-7.
Owens closed the regular season by defeating OCCAC opponent Columbus State 25-22, 25-22, 22-25, 25-16 and on Saturday defeated Cuyahoga 25-11, 25-5, 25-8. On the Owens team are Lauren Lind (Lake) and Alyssa LaVoy (Eastwood), Lind has 66 sets, 100 kills, 13 assists, one ace, 25 digs, 31 blocks and 119 points. LaVoy has 23 sets, two aces, 23 digs, and two points.
Coached by Sonny Lewis, the Express took a 37-7 overall record into the double elimination tournament where they played Mott (10-13) on Nov. 5 in quarterfinal action. If they would advance, the Express would have played the winner of the Macomb (21-16)/St. Clair (22-18) match on Nov. 6 in the semifinals. The championship match was Nov. 7.
Other teams participating in the tournament include Columbus State (23-6), Henry Ford (5-19), Schoolcraft (20-13) and Oakland (32-5).
On Oct. 30, the Express captured the OCCAC regular season championship with the victory over Cuyahoga. Owens has won 10 out of the last 11 OCCAC regular season championships. Lewis’ squad finished 11-1 in the OCCAC regular season standings and is ranked No. 11 in the latest NJCAA Division II volleyball regular season poll. Additionally, the Express is currently on a 22-match winning streak.
Other Express team members include Shelby Schuster (Sylvania Southview), Jessica Knueve (Kalida), Alyssa Wielfaert (Start), Amanda Schuster (Southview), Erin Schatzle (Monroe, Mich.), Alyssa Pelish (Central Catholic), Ellie Comes (Sylvania Southview), Ashley Horak (Bowling Green), Julia Haupricht (Central Catholic), Allie McAfee (Milan, Mich.), Allison Seifker (Monroeville) and Brittany Egbert (Hopewell-Loudon).
The NJCAA Division II National Championship will be Nov. 18-20 in Wisconsin Dells, Wis.
