Toledo prep sports could be in for major overhaul
There could be more changes coming to high school sports in Toledo than just a new format in the Toledo City Athletic League.

Six schools, Waite, Woodward, Start, Scott, Bowsher, and Rogers, are all that will remain in the City League because all the other schools are bolting for the newly formed Three Rivers Athletic Conference.. It will mean CL championships for one of those public schools in every sport, which could bring a renewed confidence to the athletic programs.

But there are more changes happening in Toledo.

Declining enrolment has left Scott and Woodward football teams in Division IV, Waite and Rogers in Division III, and Bowsher and Start in Division II. As a result, we’re looking at a league more similar in make-up to the Suburban Lakes League or Sandusky Bay Conference as far as enrollment.

The six remaining schools are looking for different competition, as Woodward has even scheduled Monclova Christian Academy in basketball this winter.

But there is even more.

Toledo Maritime Academy, as well as other charter schools, is in the process of becoming members of the Ohio High School Athletic Association. TMAT is located downtown.

Last year, TMAT’s enrollment jumped from 129 to 188 students, and this year is at 233 for grades 5-12. TMAT students are called “Cadets,” as will the nickname be for its athletic programs. The other four high schools enrollment is even larger in some cases, demonstrating those schools could have tackle football now if students were interested and the athletic department infrastructure was in place.

TMA, in its fifth year, currently has 233 students, and already competes in sports with five other Toledo-area high schools (Winterfield Venture, Horizon Science, Bennett Venture, and New Bedford academies) and 15 middle schools in forming a new league.

“Actually, we do belong to the Ohio High School Athletic Association (probationary status),” wrote TMA superintendent Renee A. Marazon in an e-mail to The Press. “ If fact, we initiated last year and are in our ‘waiting period’ and requirement fulfillment time of offering two sports per semesters. We have several community schools as members of the Community School Athletic Conference. Maritime hosted the OHSAA Coaches Training on September 14, 2010.”

TMA is currently offering cross country, flag football, volleyball, and basketball. Flag football is not an OHSAA sport, which means the five schools just compete against each other.

“Maritime Academy in Toledo just started their probationary period with OHSAA,” OHSAA administrative assistant Angie Lawler told The Press. “They’ve been attending membership meetings going on four years now and are very close to completing the process. Horizon Science Academy in Toledo has also been attending these meetings, they have not deemed this year as their probationary year, but I believe they are also close in the process.”

Horizon Science academies in Cleveland and Columbus, part of the same program, are already members of the OHSAA, and the Toledo school’s boys basketball team has sought opportunities to play games against other small schools in the area.

“For schools to begin membership, they must follow all rules and regulations in the OHSAA Handbook. Once the school feels they are ready, they begin their probationary year in which the OHSAA contacts them after every season to make sure they are still comfortable in the process and feel they are still ready for full membership the next school year,” Lawler continued.

“We hold a membership meeting in May and collect the schedule and results from the school’s probationary year games, the prospective schedules for their first year of membership, their membership application with school contact information and a resolution from their governing board authorizing membership in the OHSAA. If everything is in order, we submit their application packet to our Board of Directors at the May meeting.”

Weirich breaks record
Oak Harbor soccer player Phil Weirich broke the school’s career goals record (94 by Nic Kleman, 2003-2006).  He now has 96 for his career.

The Rockets, coached by Rob Schimmoeller, defeated Clyde 6-0. Scoring goals for the Rocket's were Weirich (4) and Ian Miller (2)..  Adding assists were Tyler Eoff (3),, Ian Miller, Phil Weirich and D.J. Reau. Goalie Trent Lacer made one save. With the win the Rocket's improve to 12-2 on the season and 8-1 in the SBC.

Tabbert sets new standard
On September 29, Nathan Tabbert, 29, of Milbury and former Genoa High School golfer and state qualifier, shot his

age (29) in the Men's 9-hole Fall Golf League at Detwiler Park Golf Course. Head Detwiler golf pro and PGA member Cody W. Morse believes Tabbert’s score may be a nine-hole record at Detwiler.

Tabbert started with a birdie on Hole No. 1, parred No. 2 2 then hopped back on the birdie train on hole No. 3 where he made a two on the always difficult par 3.  Tabbert then proceeded to birdie the next six holes and came up just short on No. 9 with a par for a 9-hole score of 29.

This was Tabbert’s lowest round for 9-holes in his career as an amateur. Tabbert is working at Detwiler under the guidance Morse and Nathan will be entering the PGA of America's Professional Golf Manangement Program next season.
