The Lake Flyers Varsity Cross Country Teams competed Saturday in the Cardinal Stritch Invitational at Maumee Bay State Park.

The boys placed sixth overall of the 15 Division I and II teams competing, just five points behind Sylvania Southview. Nathan Adkins finished 11th overall and Scott Brittenham's personal record of 17:25 placed him in 25th. Steve Stanley set a personal record as well, running 17:47 and finishing 35th. Riley Breese was 40th and Nathan Scanlan 47th to round out the Flyers top five scorers. Sophomore Dustin Preble and freshmen Ty Basilius and Orfrancis Ozuna also set personal records at Maumee Bay. 

The girls finished 14th of the 15 teams competing in the Division I and II race. The Flyers were led by Hunter Johnson and Stormi Roelle's seasonal best races. Hailee Greenlese, Amber Soncrant and Caitlin Stickler also scored for the Lady Flyers. Amber Soncrant, Caitlin Stickler, Kandie King also had their best races of the season and

Maricarmen Mendez, Kaili Powell, and Mallory Lee set personal records on a cold and windy day.

Lake also competed at White Star Park in Gibsonburg in the second Suburban Lakes League Jamboree — this time in sweltering heat.

The Lake varsity boys’ team tied Eastwood for second after scoring the top five runners, but placed third overall when factoring in the sixth runner from both teams. The Flyers were led by senior Steve Stanley who finished eighth overall and Riley Breese in ninth.

“The Flyers were attempting to run more as a pack in the sweltering heat and had Nathan Scanlan placed 11th and Nathan Adkins in 12th,” Coach Ken Mysinger said.

Scott Brittenham rounded out the scoring for the Flyers by placing 17th overall.

The Lake girls finished sixth of the six teams, fielding a complete squad and were paced by Stormi Roelle'a 17th place overall finish. Hailee Greenlese and Hunter Johnson finished 22nd and 23rd while Amber Soncrant placed 26th and Destiny Coutcher 38th.

On September 18, Lake raced in the Lakota Invitational. The girls placed 14th of the 19 teams who finished and were led by Johnson in 55th place overall of the 216 finishers. Greenlese finished 68th,  Caitlin Stickler was 97th, Soncrant 108th, and Stephanie Hull ran a personal best to place 112th, Coutcher was 121st, and Tatiana Walters 143rd for the Flyers top seven.

The boys’ team finished two points out of second to take home the third place trophy out of the 19 teams competing. Adkins and Breese were seventh and eighth of the 206 competitors. Brittenham was the first freshman to finish, placing 22nd overall. Stanley was 29th, and Scanlan 31st to round out the scoring. Orfrancis Ozuna and Dustin Preble were the Flyer's sixth and seventh runners for the team, each setting personal records.

Lake’s high school and middle school teams participated in the 41st edition of the Tiffin Cross Country Carnival. This race is the third largest cross country event in the nation based on the number of competitors.

The girls’ varsity team placed 21st of the 28 teams competing in the Division II race with juniors Johnson and Greenlese leading the team by placing 98th and 110th overall of the 192 runners competing in the "A" division. Roelle finished 111th, Caitlin Stickler was 137th, and Soncrant 140th for the Flyers scoring. Coutcher and Hull also placed 157th and 169th in the varsity race.

In the girls open race, Samantha Gomez finished in 40th place overall of the 275 finishers and Tatiana Walters 67th.

In the boys D-II race, the Flyers finished ninth of the 40 teams competing in the "A" division. The Flyers were led by Nathan Adkins 19th overall finish in a time of 16:47. Adkin’s time places him in Lake's All Time Top Ten List for 5K cross country races.

Riley Breese placed 44th overall, Scott Brittenham was 63rd, Nathan Scanlan was 90th. Steve Stanley finished 139th despite running with one shoe half on for most of the race, Drew Northcut was 225th and Dustin Preble 235th.

The Lake middle school team competed at the Lakota Invitational, finishing 11th overall of the 23 teams competing. Seventh grader Emanual Aranda led the young Flyers effort by finishing 26th overall. Jake Momany placed 41st, Matt Sartor 55th, Bennett Breese 89th, K.J. Hardeman 112th, Grant Blackburn 154th, and Branden Johnson 189th.

It was another great effort by the Lake Girls Middle School Cross Country Team as they took home the second place team trophy at the Lakota Invitational finishing behind Westlake. There were 23 teams competing and the Lady Flyers were led by Alex Matus's sixth place overall of the 232 finishers. Matus was followed closely by her sister Lyndsey who placed ninth overall. Shelby Zaremski and Marissa Boos finished 25th and 26th while McKenzie Brittenham was 35th and Kristen Deal 50th. Alaina Smith placed 82nd and Lauren Ozuk 194th.

The Flyers’ middle school teams also competed in the second Suburban Lakes League Jamboree at White Star Park in the oppressive heat.

Coach Mysinger wrote in an e-mail that “the Flyers were on fire” as the Lake boys team finished in second place overall. The Flyers were led by Emanuel Aranda's fourth place overall finish. Jake Momany was 13th, Matt Sartor 15h, Bennett Breese 16th, Grant Blackburn in 36th, and Branden Johnson 37th.

The girls placed five runners in the top nine to “burn the competition,” Mysinger wrote.  Alex Matus placed third overall, Lyndsey Matus was fourth, and Shelby Zaremski, Marissa Boos, and McKenzie Brittenham finished in seventh, eighth, and nine place to round out the scoring for the Flyers. Kristen Deal placed 26th, Alaina Smith 29th, and Lauren Ozuk 57th.

“Another great effort by the girls squad under very difficult circumstances. Well done ladies,” Mysinger said.
