The Lake cross country teams competed in the Wood County Championships at Mary Jane Thurston State Park.
The boys team placed their top five among the first 18 runners to secure second place overall. Bowling Green won the team title. Lake junior Nathan Adkins finished second overall, junior Riley Breese was sixth followed by freshman Scott Brittenham in 13th, junior Nathan Scanlan 14th, and senior Steve Stanley 18th to receive All-Wood County honors. Sophomore Drew Northcut placed 32nd and junior Dustin Preble was 33rd. The Flyers competed this past Saturday at the Tiffin Cross Country Carnival, the nation's second largest cross country event.
At the county championships, the Lake girls finished sixth overall of the seven teams and were led by senior Stormi Roelle and junior Hunter Johnson's 18th and 20th overall placements. Juniors Hailee Greenlese, and Caitlin Stickler placed 25th and 26th and sophomore Amber Soncrant rounded out the scoring for the Lady Flyers finishing 27th. The top 25 are All-Wood County.
At the Norm Bray Invitational in Fremont, in the open race, Adkins toured the course to easily win the boys’ open race by 39 seconds. Scanlan placed third overall in the male open. In the male varsity race, junior captain Riley Breese finished fifth overall to lead the Flyers to a fifth place overall team standing out of the 12 teams competing. Brittenham placed 14th overall, senior Steve Stanley was 25th, and sophomores Northcut and Preble rounded out the top five runners placing 49th and 50th.
In the girls’ race, Roelle placed fourth overall. Johnson and Greenlese paced the Lady Flyers finishing 34th and 39th respectively. Soncrant and juniors Caitlin Stickler and Samantha Gomez rounded out the Flyers scoring by finishing 41st, 42nd, and 49th.
In the first of two Suburban Lakes League Jamborees at Mary Jane Thurston State Park, The Lake boys was were paced by junior captain Riley Breese who finished second overall and Scanlan who placed fourth. Also scoring for the Flyers was Brittenham, 12th place, senior Steve Stanley, 17th, and junior Nathan Adkins in 21st. Northcut finished 33rd and junior Dustin Preble was 35th. The Flyers placed second in the team competition, five points behind champion Eastwood.
In the Jamboree girls’ race, Lake junior Hunter Johnson placed ninth, junior Caitlin Stickler 15th, Soncrant 16th, and junior captain Hailee Greenlese was 17th. Rounding out the top seven runners for the Lady Flyers was juniors Tatiana Walters in 34th, Stephanie Hull in 35th, and senior Destiny Coutcher in 40th. The Lady Flyers team finished fourth overall in the team standings.
The Lake Middle School girls cross country team placed first at the Eastwood Flying Eagle Invitational. Seventh grader Alex Matus was the individual champion in a time of 13:14 (two miles) followed by her sister Lyndsey Matus in 13:15. Shelby Zemenski placed ninth overall, Marissa Boos 19th, McKenzie Brittenham 25th. Kristen Deal, Alaina Smith, and Lauren Ozuk also contributed to their team’s showing in a race that had 253 finishers. Oak Harbor finished second at 35 points behind in the small school division which consisted of 10 teams.
