Owens Community College volleyball player Lauren Lind (Lake) recorded five kills, six sets, two assists, one dig, two blocks and scored five points as the Express split a tri-match.
Owens defeated Muskegon 25-8, 20-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-9 and lost to Oakland 22-25, 19-25, 23-25. The Express are 4-2 on the season.
Lind, a 5-foot-10 sophomore outside hitter, has 11 sets, seven kills, three assists, one dig, five blocks, and 9½ points. Teammate Alyssa LaVoy (Eastwood), a 5-2 sophomore defensive specialist, has three sets.
At the Grand Rapids Invitational, Owens finished 3-1, defeating Michigan schools Jackson, Kellogg, Kalamazoo Valley (ranked 15th in national preseason poll) and losing to Grand Rapids (ranked fifth).
Owens soccer Owens men's soccer opened the season 2-0 at the Delta College Invitational Tournament. The Express defeated Delta 3-0 Saturday on two goals by sophomore forward Rodcliff Hall and a tally from sophomore midfielder Michael Hamouda. Owens sophomore goalie Pavle Udovicic contributed seven saves for the shut-out.
In the championship game on Sunday, Hall and freshman Glenroy Miller scored on assists from Hamouda. Udovicic again contributed seven saves for the shut-out.
Hall was named tournament MVP.
Hall was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and Lamar Lemonius, Rodcliff Hall, Michael Hamouda, and Pavle Udovicic were All-Tournament selections. The Express record goes to 2-0 in the Region XII conference, and 2-0 overall. Owens visited Monroe Community College in Rochester, N.Y. on September 4 for its next match.
The new Owens women’s soccer club team made its season and program debut as the Express hosted Lorain County Community College on Sept. 1.
“This is a very exciting day for Owens Community College and collegiate women’s soccer in Northwest Ohio,” said Michael Rickard, Owens Director of Athletics. “Owens women’s soccer has received a lot of interest from students since the announcement was made to expand the College’s intercollegiate athletic programs. We have a very talented group of students comprising the new women’s soccer club team and I expect them to be very competitive during the inaugural fall season.”
First-year players to the club are Sarah Weaver (Margaretta), Alexia Proch (St. Ursula Academy), Marissa Szabo (Sylvania Southview), Erica Lankey (Toledo Christian), Amalia Diaz (Perrysburg), Alyvia Lieber (Maumee), Brittany Jarouche (Start), Aleha Almester (Rossford), Heather Majewski (Ida, Mich.), Jillian Whitlow (Toledo Christian), Alecia Zaper (Anthony Wayne), Shara Williams (Springfield), Shelly Smith (Start), Lauren McFellin (Springfield), Sara Ruiz (Swanton), Amanda Roumaya (Whitmer), Jessica Kuhn (Perrysburg), Malaysia Wright (Central Catholic) and Shelby Ramirez (Whitmer).
Earlier this month, Owens announced the expansion of its intercollegiate athletic programs with the creation of a new women’s soccer team. The Express program will officially begin NJCAA competition during the 2011 fall season and serve as a club sport during the 2010 fall semester.
The Express women’s soccer program will become a Division II member of the NJCAA. Owens will primarily compete against other colleges and universities from Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania, including Cincinnati State, Lorain County, Jackson, Schoolcraft, Delta and Mercyhurst North East, among others.
Owens new women’s soccer club team is currently under the leadership of Art Johnson, the veteran coach of the men’s soccer team, and his assistants Jeremiah McNutt and Keith Closson. During his tenure, Johnson-led teams have compiled a 128-100-15 overall record. Express men’s soccer finished with a 12-7-1 overall record during the 2009 fall campaign.
The Express women’s soccer program becomes the eighth intercollegiate athletic program offered at Owens. The seven other sports include men’s baseball, women’s softball, men’s golf, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s soccer and women’s volleyball.
