The Oak Harbor soccer team is returning Second Team All-Ohio forward and Sandusky Bay Conference Most Outstanding Player Phil Weirich for his senior season.

Last year, Weirich scored 27 goals and had 18 assists while also being chosen First Team All-District and First Team All-SBC. He also returns as the team captain.

Last year, Oak Harbor was 15-5 overall and 8-3-1 in the SBC. Key losses from last year’s team include Jesse Baker, Brandon Wasserman, and Drew Stone.

Also returning on offense are senior forward Ian Miller (six goals, eight assists), senior midfielder Tyler Eoff (20 goals, 14 assists), senior midfielder Alex Swope (seven goals, five assists), junior midfielder Caden Goldstein (three goals, six assists), junior midfielder J.J. Rathbun (two goals, one assist). Eoff was a First Team All-District and All-SBC selection, while Swope earned honorable mention honors in the SBC.

Defensive returnees include senior D.J. Reau (one goal, two assists), senior Myles Backus (one goal, three assists), junior Jake Hetrick (three goals, four assists), and junior Phil Bryant (one goal, two assists). Reau was a First Team All-SBC, Second Team District choice, Backus was Second Team SBC, Honorable Mention District, and Hetrick was Honorable Mention SBC last season.

“With 14 returing letter winners I think we can challenge for a league title,” Coach Rob Schimmoeller. “Our postseason goal is to advance to the regionals.

“Four-year starters Weirich and Eoff are players to watch offensively as they combined for 47 goals last season. Defensively, four-year starers Reau and Backus pace a defense which returns all of its starters and only gave up 23 goals in 20 games last season. Barring injury we have potential for a great season.”

Returning at goalkeeper is junior Trent Lacer, who was 6-1 last year with 36 saves. Other returning letter winners include seniors Anthony Hopkins, Alex Wilhelm, and junior Nick Bowlick. Varsity newcomers are seniors Justin Velliquette, Andrew Karsten, and Gabe Frisch.

Scoreboard messaging

High School’s Memorial Stadium to the list, providing a new experience for football fans.

As a result of advertising sponsorship on the front and back, a new $32,000 scoreboard complete with message board was purchased and installed on the south end of the stadium without the use of any taxpayer money.

“I think it’s going to be very neat because I think it will enhance the facility, and we’re still keeping the old scoreboard on the north end and now we have kind of a blending of the old and the new with the new scoreboard,” said Clay athletic director and football coach Mike Donnelly.

In addition, an estimated $11,000-plus in annual revenue generated from the scoreboard will enable the athletic department to reduce its dependence on monies from the general fund.

“We’ve very proud, very excited,” Donnelly said. “I think it’s very humbling to see that in this economy that we still have people who are willing to support our athletic programs financially through advertising.”

Presently, advertising is still being sold on the backside of the scoreboard and for the message board to be displayed during football games. The backside advertising will be seen from the entrance to Memorial Stadium, the parking lot, and Seaman Street.
