After shooting their way to a close runner-up spot to the perennial Suburban Lakes League “Sheriffs-in-Town” Genoa in 2007, a respectable third-place finish at Sectionals which qualified them for District play, and top three finishing spots in virtually every tourney (including outgunning everyone in the Old Fort Invitational), it should come as no surprise to anyone that seventh-year head coach Scott Smith and his Woodmore golfers were one of the most smoking-hot local golf teams around these parts.

Woodmore’s golfers are entering this brand-new fray with confidence along with some young, re-loaded talent. The Wildcats lost no key players from a year ago, when they finished 6-1 in SLL dual play.
“The top two teams in the league this year will be Genoa and Woodmore, based on both teams having almost all of their players back from last year,” enthuses Coach Smith. “I also would never count out Eastwood in golf, as they have an excellent program, and I know Coach Gardner will have his kids playing well.

“Lake is also an up-and-coming program,” he praises. “They have one of the best golfers in the league, and their younger players are committed to getting better. Our success last year was also due to the hard work our players put in to improve their golf games. We have five returning letter winners this year. And this year we feel we have the experience to get out of Districts, and qualify for State.”

Leading that charge will be senior leader Jack “Frost” Rospert, who shot his way all the way to All-SLL First-Team accolades a year ago. Rospert tied the WHS 18-hole school record when he shot a 72 at Sectionals last season.

Holding down the number two spot will be fellow senior Austin Judy, who will be a welcome addition after a nagging wrist injury hampered his sharp medium-range, irons game for much of last year. Spots three through six will be manned by Robert Schumacher (Sr.), Ryan Beam (Jr.), Andy Flick (Jr.), and standout freshman Billy Blausey, the former two of whom go off like a cannon from the tee box and are a sharpshooter on the green respectively, while the last two are brand-new talents in the fold.
