Hernandez claimed the UAA title in the hammer throw with a distance of 48.75 meters.  The freshman also placed sixth in the discus throwing 38.03 meters.  Hernandez became the third men’s track and field outdoor rookie of the year honoree and second in three years

Hernandez’s top outdoor shot put is 11.51 at Washington & Jefferson, his top discus throw is 39.62 Washington and Lee), and his top hammer throw is 49.17 at the Carnegie Mellon Tri Meet.  He finished third in the discus throw and first in the hammer throw at the UAA Championships.

This past winter at indoor meets, Hernandez’s top shot put was 11.65 at Slippery Rock, his top weight throw is 15.11 at Case Western Reserve, and he finished sixth in the shot put and third in the weight throw at the UAA Championships.

This spring, Hernandez placed fifth with a throw of 45.72m as the Carnegie Mellon placed fourth at the University Athletic Association Championships hosted by Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Northwood soccer
The Northwood Soccer Club is now accepting registrations for both their fall soccer season and a summer camp staffed by the Northwood High School Girls Soccer Team.

This fall the club plans to field boys and girls teams for 8- to 14-year-olds and coed teams for 4- to 6-year-olds. The season runs from August to November. Registration costs $40 per player and includes a team T-shirt. Families who register more than one child will receive a $5 discount for additional players – $35 per child. There is a $110 cap per family. The deadline for fall registration is June 23.

Also, a soccer camp for 6- to 14-year-old boys and girls will be held July 12-16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Brentwood Park in Northwood. The camp will be staffed by Mike Smothers, former president, Northwood Soccer Club; Keith Eva, referee coordinator, Northwood Soccer Club; and members of the Northwood High School girls soccer team. The camp costs $5 per player.

“Our goal for the camp is to help kids become better and more confident soccer players – and have a blast while doing it. We’ll work on the basics in technical and tactical training then practice what we learn in tournament play,” said Eva. “And, the Northwood Soccer Club is looking forward to help from the Ranger’s ladies soccer team. Most of these girls started their soccer careers in our soccer club.”
