Owens Community College honored basketball programs at its annual awards banquet, and Brittany Darling, a 2008 graduate of Genoa High School, was on the receiving end of three awards.

The 6-foot-3 center, who is headed to play Division I basketball at Tennessee Tech next year, is an Ohio Community College Athletic Conference First Team choice. She has been named along with Jasmine Blanton (Notre Dame Academy) the team’s Co-Most Valuable Player and Darling was chosen to the All-Region XII Tournament Team.

Darling joins Owens teammate Sarah Clark as an NCAA D-I transfer. Clark is headed to the University of Toledo to play basketball.

“I am really proud of Brittany Darling and Sarah Clark and excited that they will have an opportunity to continue their college education and athletic careers at Tennessee Tech University and The University of Toledo,” said Owens coach Michael Llanas.

“Both Brittany and Sarah were leaders on and off basketball court and will certainly succeed at their respective four-year schools.”

The Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles finished their 2009-10 season with a 14-16 overall record, while The University of Toledo Rockets completed their 2009-10 campaign with an overall record of 25-9.

During her career at Owens, Darling averaged 10.9 points, 9.6 rebounds and 3.1 block shots per game for the Express. Darling holds the school records for most rebounds in a single game (21) and blocks in a season (127).

Clark averaged 11.3 points, 8.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.3 steals per game for the Express during her career. In 2009-10, the sophomore guard/forward was a Second Team OCCAC All-Conference selection and was named the team’s Mark Henry Award recipient. The 2008 Delphos St. John’s graduate also earned NJCAA Division II Pre-Season All-American Second Team honors.

Owens finished the 2009-10 campaign with a 27-6 overall record and an 11-3 mark (second place) in the OCCAC regular season standings. Owens lost to Schoolcraft College in the finals of the NJCAA Region XII Championships. The Express was ranked No. 6 in the final NJCAA D-II poll.

Other women’s Basketball awards presented were: Most Improved Player – Renee Bidlack (Wayne Trace); Defensive Player of the Year – Saige Meyer (Patrick Henry); Coaches Award – Jordan Floyd (Anthony Wayne); Mark Henry Award – Clark; OCCAC Newcomer of the Year – Blanton; OCCAC All-Conference First Team – Blanton; NJCAA All-Region XII Team – Blanton; NJCAA Division II Pre-Season All-American Second Team –   Clark

Other team members included Rachelle Allen (Whitmer), Ashley Hooker (Whitmer), Kaila Corrothers (Detroit Consortium), Kelsey Perry (Willard), Rashanna Johnson (Columbus Whitehall-Yearling), Nasumbi Beard (Ontario), Demi Moschetti (Perrysburg), Gabbie Cerovski (Lakewood) and Karrah Windau (Carey).

The Owens men’s basketball team also handed out awards at the banquet. Led by Coach Kevin Skaggs, the Express finished the season with a 15-16 overall record and an 8-6 mark (fourth place) in the OCCAC. Owens lost to Sinclair in the Region XII Championships.

Men’s Basketball awards presented were: MVP – Jonathan Dunn (St. John’s Jesuit); Most Improved – Derrick Sanderfer Jr. (Rogers); Defensive POY – Earl Hardison (Westland John Glenn, Mich.); Coaches Award – Tommy Kralovic (Rossford); OCCAC All-Conference First Team – Dunn; OCCAC All-Conference Honorable Mention – Hardison, Dalante Heard (Rogers) and Joshua Robinson (Elkhart Central, Ind.); NJCAA All-Region XII First Team – Dunn

Other members of the team were Michael Lee (Inkster Wayne Memorial, Mich.), Virgil McGuire (Massillon Jackson), Calvin Edwards (Delaware Rutherford B. Hayes), Dylan Jablonski (Erie Mason, Mich.) and Craig Short (Rogers).
