Brummett loses sudden death playoff in Tiffin tourney
Owens Community College golf begins its postseason run toward a national title as the program competes in the NJCAA Region XII Men’s Golf Championships next week. The tournament will be held at Bedford Valley Golf Club in Battle Creek, Mich., May 10-11.

Local members are Torey Brummett, 76.5 scoring average (Cardinal Stritch); Brooks Gardner, 81.9 (Bowling Green); and Nick Speck, 84.6 (Eastwood). Gardner is the son of State Representative Randy Gardner, an Eastwood graduate. The Express are coached by Gil Guerrero, a Waite graduate.

While at ,Stritch, Brummett, a state qualifier, was named Toledo Area Athletic Conference Player of the Year for a third straight season after shooting a 68 at Detwiler his senior year.

Golfing for Owens in the 13-team Kyle Ryman Memorial hosted by Tiffin University at Mohawk Country Club, Brummett finished tied for first as an individual, but lost a sudden death playoff on the ninth hole. Brummett’s score was 71-73-144. Gardner shot 85-88-165.

Owens finished eighth as a team, totaling 636 strokes against a field of four-year colleges. The match was won by Tiffin (596), followed by Wayne State (601), Saginaw Valley State (613), Ohio Dominican (614), Findlay (614), Ashland (618), and Northwood (620). Placing behind Owens was California, Pa. (640), Lake Erie (645), Urbana (719), and Northern Michigan and Lake Superior State did not set a team score.

The Express golf team captured one match and invitational title during the season, highlighted by a second-place finish in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference championship. The program also finished second in the NJCAA Region XII Sub-Regional championship after rounds of 333-307 (640) at Belmont Country Club in Perrysburg.

Now in its fifth year as an intercollegiate athletic program, Owens will compete against 10 intercollegiate golf programs and over 60 individuals in the two-day 54-hole NJCAA Region XII tournament. The program must finish as one of the top two teams to advance to the NJCAA Division II National Championship, May 18-21. Individuals can also advance to the national championship tournament. Owens made two trips (2006 and 2008) to the NJCAA Division II National Championship.

The team’s overall record is 25-33, and league record is 9-3. At the five-team OCCAC Lorain Invitational at Elyria Country Club, Gardner led Owens with a 79 and Brummett had an 84. Owens (328) finished third behind Columbus State (313) and Cincinnati State (318), and ahead of Lakeland (341) and Lorain (378) community colleges.

At the five-team OCCAC meet hosted by Lakeland at Quail Hollow in suburban Cleveland, Owens finished second with 308 strokes behind Columbus State (308). Cincinnati State (314), Lakeland (342), and Lorain (347) followed. Brummett shot a 74, Speck had an 83, and Gardner had an 85.

At the five-team OCCAC meet hosted by Owens at Belmont, the Express (640) finished three strokes behind Columbus State (637). Cincinnati State (652) and Lakeland (664) followed, as Lorain did not set a team score. Brummett shot 82-77-159 and Gardner had 86-76-162.

Other Owens golf student-athletes include Tyler Bice, 79.7 scoring average (Lima Bath); Kyle Laberdee, 77.2 (Bowling Green); Ryan Medeiros of Pickering, Canada, 80.5 (Notre Dame Catholic); Lee Schmidlin, 86.6 (Whitmer); and Patrick Stacy, 83 (Van Buren).

The Genoa High School athletic department will be holding its annual golf outing June 12 at Chippewa Golf Course with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Cost is $65 per person. The Micki Kohler Benefit on May 15 at Vail Meadows Equestrian Center in Oregon will include the Maumee Bay Buckle Series Barrel Racing and Poles. Expo barrels and poles begin at 12:30 p.m. and the show starts at 2:30 p.m. It is free to the public. On April 28, 2010, Kohler, the Vail Meadows barn manager was badly injured in a horse accident and is in the hospital with severe head injuries. Proceeds benefit her and her family, and it includes a silent auction and raffles.
