Former Cardinal Stritch golfer Torey Brummett, a Toledo Area Athletic
Conference champion, and former Eastwood golfer Nick Speck are beginning their college golf careers this spring at Owens Community College.
Also playing for Owens is Brooks Gardner (Bowling Green), the son of State Representative Randy Gardner, an Eastwood graduate. After four events, this year’s team has an overall record of 8-17.
Owens’ golf program is guided by fourth-year coach Gil Guerrero. The Express golf team captured five match and invitational titles during the 2009 spring season, highlighted by its third consecutive first-place finish in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference Championships. The program also captured its fourth NJCAA Region XII Sub-Regional championship after rounds of 317-314 (631) at Belmont.
“Our golf team is extremely young as we are without any returning student-athletes from last year’s conference championship squad,”stated Guerrero. “Even though we are young and inexperienced at the collegiate level, our goal remains the same as previous years, which is to compete at the highest level and contend for another conference title.”
At the eight-team non-conference Jet Spring Invitational at the Grande Golf Club hosted by Jackson CC (Mich.), Brummett and Gardner each shot an 81 and Speck had an 87 as Owens finished seventh. Team scores were Kalamazoo Valley (303), Grand Rapids (305), Jackson (315), Schoolcraft (318), Glen Oaks (319), Muskegon (324), Owens (324), and Ancilla (330).
At the eight-team Mott Invitational, Owens finished fifth as Speck shot a 79, Gradner had an 85, and Brummett an 86. Three teams, Oakland, St. Clair, and Mott, shared the title with 314 strokes followed by Schoolcraft (322), Owens (325), Henry Ford (381), Kirtland (406), and Alpena (NTS).
At the seven-team Early Bird Invitational at Pilgrim’s Run Golf Course, Owens finished fourth as Gardner shot an 88 and Speck had an 89. Team scores were Mott (310), Kalamazoo Valley (317), Trine (319), Owens (320), Grand Rapids (321), Muskegon (326), and Ancilla (330).
At the seven-team Oakland CC Invitational at Pontiac Country Club, Owens finished fifth as Gardner shot an 83. The team championship was shared by Mott and Oakland at 304 strokes followed by St. Clair (308), Muskegon (313), Owens (314), Schoolcraft (321), and Kirtland (394).
Other first-year players to the Express golf program are Tyler Bice (Lima Bath), Kyle Laberdee (Bowling Green), Ryan Medeiros of Pickering, Canada (Notre Dame Catholic), Lee Schmidlin (Whitmer), and Patrick Stacy (Van Buren).
