You be the judge. The Press media representatives and area coaches have spoken.
Genoa Community Christian Academy 5-foot-9 senior guard Ben Davies has been voted a Second Team Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press choice. He is the first GCCA player to do better than honorable mention (which only requires nomination) — which means Davies received a significant amount of votes.
Davies averaged 21 points and eight rebounds, and had a single game-high of 40 points and 15 rebounds this season. Davies also averaged 1.1 assists and 1.5 steals.
In voting by 11 area coaches and 12 media representatives, Davies received 14 points (a first team vote counts two points, second team one point).
Whether Davies’ numbers on the court can be compared to other players who are even chosen honorable mention is, how does the cliché go, “apples to apples and oranges to oranges.”
Genoa Christian is playing a schedule against other very small Christian schools from throughout the region — none of whom are members of the Ohio High School Athletic Association. But The Press will recognize the voter’s wishes, because in his realm he must deserve it.
One voter e-mailed, “Yes, Ben Davies. This kid can play. Outstanding young athlete and great kid. He's also a track standout,” and went on to add that he believes Davies could play a role at any of the other local teams.
GCCA coach Benjamin Church was also chosen as the Independent Christian Schools of Ohio/Michigan Coach of the Year this season, even though the team struggled in ICSOM play to win games. This is Church’s first season as head coach at GCCA, taking over for Arnold Sutter.
This is Genoa Christian’s fourth year of high school basketball, and the first year of the ICSOM, which includes Monclova Christian, Grand Lake Christian (Auglaize County), Fountain City Christian (Williams County), and Bowling Green Christian.
