Last Sunday, Oak Harbor wrestling finished second to host St. Paris Graham at
the Division II State Duals. The Rockets were the No. 2 seed behind Graham, which won its ninth straight Division II state (11th overall) last spring by setting a state scoring record with 282 points.
"We took second at the Duals one other time, when Cody Magrum was a senior (2007-08), and that team was a state runner-up," Coach George Bergman said. "Anytime you have a team like St. Paris Graham that is ranked No. 2 in the country and is in your division, the best you can do is take second."
Drew Stone, who did not wrestle against Graham, went 2-0 as Oak Harbor beat Greenville and Beaver Local at the Duals. The Rockets won three of 14 matches against Graham.
"It was a good learning experience," Bergman said.
Oak Harbor also placed second overall, behind Lakewood St. Edward, and took first in its division at the Medina Invitational on Dec. 28-29.
Ian Miller (140) and Witt (152) both won their divisions, while Stone lost to Gus Sako of St. Edward, 1-0, in the title match. Alex Bergman (130) also took second, while George Bergman won the Outstanding Coach Award after leading the Rockets to their highest finish ever at Medina.
The Rockets, who beat visiting Willard (67-0) and Clay (48-22) on Jan. 6, were to compete at the Perrysburg Invitational on Jan. 15-16.
