Jasmine Blanton (Notre Dame Academy), a freshman guard for Owens
Community College, was named the NJCAA Division II national player of the week for January 6.
Owens is 13-2 on the season and off to their best start in school history since the 1996-97 year when they also started 13-2. The 13 wins are also the most in school history before New Year's.
Blanton averaged 18 points per game over break for Owens, including a 27 point performance against Lake Michigan on Dec. 29. The 5-9 guard shot 77 percent from the free throw line and added 8.2 rebounds over the past four games.
“Blanton's drive and determination are what sets her apart from most athletes according to head coach Michael Llanas. He admires her poise to compete for a league title and run at a regional title,” states the National Junior College Athletic Association website.
Blanton is the 24th leading scorer in the country at 17.3 points per game. She also averages 4.9 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 2.1 steals.
The Owens Community College women’s basketball team defeated visiting Lake Michigan CC 83-64, while the Express men lost to Lake Michigan 96-93.
The leaders for the Owens women were Jasmine Blanton (Notre Dame) - 27 points, 8 rebounds; Renee Bidlack (Wayne Trace) - 13 points; Brittany Darling (Genoa) - 12 points, 12 rebounds, 6 blocks; Sarah Clark (Delphos St. John's) - 9 points, 11 rebounds.
The Owens men are now 6-9 on the season. Leaders were: Jonathan Dunn (St. John's Jesuit) - 20 points, 12 rebounds; Josh Robinson (Elkart Central, Ind.) - 19 points; DaLante Heard (Rogers) - 17 points, 10 rebounds; Michael Lee - 14 points; Earl Hardison - 12 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals. Those five players were the starters for the game.
