According to Dave Schmidt’s website,, The Midland Athletic League superintendents will meet September 8 to decide if they will expand and invite Gibsonburg and Elmwood.

Elmwood has already been offered a spot in the Northern Buckeye Conference (currently Eastwood, Genoa, Lake, Woodmore, Otsego, Rossford, and Fostoria), although missing the initial deadline of August 31.  The NBC gave Elmwood an extension until September 14 to decide if they would join.

“The NBC did say if another school stepped forward, it would not wait until Elmwood decided,” the website stated.

The NBC will begin play in two years, and any changes in the MAL would take effect in two years.

Current members of the MAL include Hopewell-Loudon, Mohawk, Lakota, Fostoria St. Wendelin (except for football), Seneca East, North Baltimore, Carey, Old Fort, Bettsville, New Reigel, Tiffin Calvert, and Fremont St. Joseph.

Rangers head to Lake
The Northwood and Lake girls’ soccer teams met on Saturday in a showdown of two of the area’s top programs.

The Rangers hosted the Otsego Knights last week in a game considered to be a special match in that Otsego’s Corine Fonsecca returned for the Knights, which was her first game since being involved in an accident this summer. However, the Rangers defeated the Knights, 3-1.

“The first half scoring was by the Rangers center striker Maddie Vickers as both squads defenses kept each other to long shots. The second half, however, found the gritty Rangers pressing and counter attacking and establishing control of the match,” said Northwood coach John Turkal in an e-mail.

Ranger Jill Lanning scored from the center striker position. Then, Otsego’s Lindsay Long scored for the Knights. Turkal said Sandy Koch sealed the win for Rangers “with a step over reverse spin from the corner of the six to beat the Knights goal tender.”

The Rangers Jessica Grindle, who had a knee injury 15 minutes into a 4-4 tie game with Eastwood, was to return to the lineup for Saturdays match against what Turkal called “the highly regarded and considered by most to be Northwest Ohio’s No. 1 Division 2 team,” namely Lake.

In the Eastwood tie, four players each scored for Northwood and the Rangers outshot the Eagles 20-9. Turkal said each team “resorted to their specialty for scoring.”

“Eastwood the long ball and Northwood it’s pressing defense which allows it to counter attack for close-in shots. The game found both teams substituting liberally as the ball continuously went the length of the field.”

Preparing for a tough Division I schedule in the Northwest Ohio Scholastic Soccer League, the Rangers traveled to Fremont Ross and defeated the Little Giants, 6-1. Kayla Kurth had three goals for the Rangers and Sandy Koch had three assists.

“Kayla Kurth scored first for the Rangers followed by goals by Jessica Grindle and Taylor Cruz. We led 3-0 at the break,” Turkal said. “Northwood then pressed Ross defensively in the second half with a goal by team leader Jessica Grindle.

“Kayla Kurth than scored on a breakaway and again on a corner kick (her third goal was by corner kick) for her second hat trick of the season.

“The defense was led by Marissa Ramirez. Megan Hess was in goal for the Rangers. Ross scored on a goal by Tera McDonald who lofted a shot over the head of Maddie Vickers who was in goal at the end of the game.”
