The Clay varsity softball team entered a Division I sectional softball final with higher-seeded Anthony Wayne at Bowling Green High School and came away soaring with an 8-3 upset victory over the Generals May 12.
It marked the second time in three seasons that the Lady Eagles (18-5) pulled off a postseason upset over Northern Lakes League frontrunner AW (18-4).
The Eagles jumped on Generals starting pitcher Emily Kurfis for two runs in the top of the first, but later fell behind 3-2 in the bottom of the second inning.
Sarah Stivaner’s RBI single in the next half frame tied the score and Hallie Thompson’s two-run single to center in the same inning put Clay in front to stay at 5-3. The Eagles added two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to give Eagles winning pitcher Kasey Graham added insurance late in the contest.
Graham allowed three runs, two earned, on nine hits. She walked one and fanned five using an effective changeup.
Wise hit 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, and Kim Crawford had a double while going 3-for-3 and reaching base safely in all four of her plate appearances.
The Eagles are scheduled to face the winner of top-seeded Springfield and Perrysburg in a district semifinal clash May 21 at 5 PM at BGHS.
