Bethlehem No. 2 of Pemberville captured the 2009 Wood County Dartball League’s tournament championship with its 8-3 playoff victory over regular-season champion Zion Luckey.
Bethlehem’s title was the team’s second postseason championship and first since 2001. Both Bethlehem and Zion finished round-robin tournament play with 8-3 records forcing the extra game. The three-week tournament was held at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Bowling Green.
Zion, which won the round-robin game against Bethlehem No. 2 by the score of 13-6, jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the playoff game thanks to Rick Nelson’s RBI triple in the first and Nelson and Mike Hoelter’s RBI doubles in the third.
However, Bethlehem rallied to score the game’s last eight runs to claim the title. Mike Coon, Jr., and Pepper Martin’s RBI doubles in the top of the fourth narrowed the gap to one run. Roger Kahlenberg then tied the game in the fifth with an RBI double.
Bethlehem took the lead for good in the seventh on Rick Cajka and Kahlenberg’s back-to-back solo home runs. Bethlehem then added three insurance tallies in the eighth on Wes Biddle’s two-run HR and John Keiser’s RBI double.
The league hosted its annual award’s dinner March 30 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stony Ridge. The first league banquet was held in 1938 and has been held annually since the conclusion on World War II.
