The 98 Toledo Cherokee travel ice hockey team completed their fall season last Sunday with a win at the Ohio Buckeye Cup State Championship and a No. 3 National Ranking.
The Tier II Squirt AA team, comprised of 1998 birth year players from around Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan, added the state championship to their trophy case and finished their fall season with an overall record of 46-17-2.
Local players include Curtice residents Garrett Meyer (Allen Elementary, Genoa Area Schools student), Bauer Ritter (Jerusalem Elementary, Oregon City Schools), and Oregon resident Angelo Procaccini (St. Jerome Elementary, Walbridge)
Coaches say the 98 Cherokee began their season last August with a week-long training camp “designed to set the tone for a rigorous season of competition.”
Competing in the Ranked Division of the Detroit-based Little Caesars Amateur Hockey League, the Cherokee completed the 16-game regular season with a record of 12-4.
Mix in Tier I and Tier II tournament appearances in Illinois, Ohio, New York, Michigan and Ontario, and the Cherokee parents have logged over 3,000 miles in their cars throughout the seven month season.
The team also won the prestigious Squirt AA Mid-Am Region Silver Stick tournament in December, qualifying them to play in the International Finals in Sarnia, Ontario in January. The International Finals is reserved for the 16 Regional Champions from across the USA and Canada and the 98 Cherokee completed the tournament in the semi-finals.
The 98 Toledo Cherokee are a part of the Greater Toledo Amateur Hockey Association and skate out of the Team Toledo Ice House.
