state runner-up in Division II at the state tournament, losing 3-2 to Logan Erb of Wapakoneta in the 215 championship match at Value City Arena in Columbus. The loss to Erb was Henderson’s only defeat this season.

Henderson started the state tournament by defeating Jared Gravely (Gallipolis Gallia Academy) 11-6, and then winning a 3-2 decision over Joe Poyser (Louisville) in the championship quarterfinal. In the semifinal, Henderson defeated Trevor Strickland (Clyde) 6-0

Four Clay wrestlers competed at the Division I level — sophomore Angelo Amenta (130), 44-10; senior Nick Garcia (103), 40-3; senior Mark Orth (135), 26-12; junior Chico Cloyne (160), 29-14.

Garcia placed fourth, being pinned by George DiCamillo (Cleveland St. Ignatius) in 4:22 in the third place match.

Garcia opened with a 6-5 decision over Ryan Murdock (Dublin Coffman), then pinned J.R. Perry (Warren Howland) in the championship quarterfinals in 4:52. In the semifinal, he was pinned by Jack Young (Mentor) in 3:17. Garcia then defeated Murdock a second time, this time by a 7-0 shutout decision, placing him in the consolation final.

Rocket grappler Ian Miller captures state championship

When Oak Harbor junior Ian Miller took an early lead in his Division II state tournament title match last Saturday in Columbus, Rockets coach George Bergman had a good feeling but he still wasn't taking anything for granted.

"Like anything else, you're never 100 percent sure, and the guy was third in the state the year before," Bergman said. "It's not like he was chopped liver. We were real confident after Ian took charge early. Our game plan was to stay on our feet because we knew the kid was real good on top. We weren't going to go 'down' unless it was a tight match."

Miller, who is known for his ability to take opponents down, did just that - repeatedly - in his 145-pound title match against senior Dylan Ice from Lisbon Beaver Local. The result was a 19-4 technical fall victory, giving Oak Harbor its 13th individual state champion.

Miller had two takedowns in the first 45 seconds to build a 7-1 advantage, and he led 11-3 at the end of the first period. By then, it was pretty much game over for Ice.

Miller, who placed third in the state at 135 a year ago, finished the season with a 41-1 record. His lone blemish was a double-overtime loss to the nation's top-ranked 140-pounder, Chris Villalonga from Blair Academy (N.J.), at the Ironman tournament on Dec. 12.

Award winning coach ends stint at Cardinal Stritch

Gary Lemle didn't think he was wearing out his welcome as the girls' basketball

coach at Cardinal Stritch, he was simply wearing out.

Earlier this month, Lemle informed Cardinal Stritch President Father David Reinhart that he was resigning as the Cardinals' head coach. Lemle, 48, leaves with an 89-63 career record including three Toledo Area Athletic Conference titles and two runner-up finishes.

"They were disappointed that I'm leaving, but after seven years I felt it was time," Lemle said. "I need to sit back a little bit and recharge the batteries. I had thought about (resigning) last year, but I decided to stay one more year and finish out with this group of six seniors."

Lemle's final Stritch squad finished 6-15 and 6-6 in the TAAC after losing senior point guard Nicole Lamb for all but eight games this season due to injury. Lemle called losing Lamb, last year's conference player of the year, a "tremendous" loss.

"My whole offense was geared to go through her in one way, shape or form," he said. "We knew we had to develop depth, and to lose her really threw everyone else into the fire."
