New RXMap program helps reduce medication errors

The Pharmacy Counter has become the first pharmacy in the area to offer RxMap® a new, state-of-the-art robotics system developed to reduce medication errors and help people remember to take their medications on schedule.

The RxMap® is a customized punch card system that organizes a patient’s pills into one convenient and easy-to-use package. Each card contains a seven-day supply of medicine that is pre-sorted by time of day and day of the week.

Failure to take medications as prescribed is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. “Our goal is to improve medication adherence by helping people remember to take the right medication at the right time, based on their doctor’s orders,” says Dennis Newsom, TPC president. “This new tool is especially helpful for people with confusing and complex medication regimens.”

TPC is only the second community pharmacy in the country with this new automated tool. For $10 a month, patients who enroll in the program will receive regular guidance from a pharmacist who will work with their physicians to assess the medication regimen and dosing schedule, follow-up consultations, monthly refill reminders and free delivery.

The punch card is small enough to carry in a purse or fit into a pocket. The sealed, tamper-evident package makes it easy for RxMap® users and caregivers to tell if medication has been taken. In addition, some cards are color-coded to make it easier for patients to know when to take their prescription drugs.

RxMap® is produced by MTS, an international provider of medication adherence packaging systems designed to improve medication dispensing and administration.
