The Ohio Department of Aging has posted the third volume of excerpts from more than 300 stories about the Great Depression written by Ohioans who lived it.
Topics covered in the collection include food and cooking, schools and education, self-sufficiency, home life, making money, community, advice and medical care. This edition, and two prior collections, are available on the department’s Web site, www.aging.ohio.gov. The fourth and final installment will be posted in December.
“One thing this project has taught us is that older Ohioans have a wealth of knowledge, experience and perspective, and they are willing to share that if we only ask,” said Barbara E. Riley, director of the department. “We are delighted to share a bit of this collective wisdom with all generations of Ohioans in the hope that they glean some nugget of information that helps them cope today.”
In March and April of this year, the department collected stories about the Great Depression from more than 300 individuals from 54 counties and a few from out of state who used to live in Ohio. The first and second collections of excerpts, which the department released in September and October, have been viewed more than 2,000 times.
