Penta Career Center has selected three former students as recipients of the 2011 Outstanding Alumni Award. The recipients will be recognized during a special evening banquet at Penta on Thursday, Nov. 3.
Each year, the Penta Outstanding Alumni Award is bestowed upon individuals who have completed a career-technical training program at Penta and who are currently working in a successful career. Since the award’s inception, 111 former high school or adult education students have been honored with the award.
This year’s honorees include: • Janea Makowski, of Walbridge, is a 2000 graduate of Lake High School and completed her career-technical training in Penta’s Culinary Arts program. She is a culinary arts instructor at Penta Career Center.

Makowski has worked as a line cook, kitchen supervisor, sous chef and executive chef at several fine dining restaurants in Toledo, Fort Myers, Ann Arbor, and Cleveland. She is a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y.
• Tamara (Shiffert) Rost, of Pemberville, is a 1989 graduate of Eastwood High School and completed her career-technical training in Penta’s Accounting & Computing program. She is the director of programming and promotions for WTVG, Inc. in Toledo. She has been employed at the television station for 20 years. She is a graduate of Owens Community College and the Simmons School of Management in Boston.
• Matthew Simpson, of Toledo, is a 1983 graduate of Anthony Wayne High School and completed the Building Services & Repair program at Penta. He is the regional manager for La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries in Toledo. Simpson has worked for La-Z-Boy for 25 years in sales, store management and computer systems administration. He has worked in Toledo and Columbus, Ohio for the company.
