Small Business Basics seminars offered at Terra
The Ohio Small Business Development Center at Terra Community College is offering free, two-hour seminars, “Small Business Basics,” designed to answer questions about starting, buying or expanding a small business.

This seminar will take the confusion out of your efforts and help you avoid costly mistakes and unnecessary steps. Learn the basics of: name registration, licensing, taxes, zoning, business entities, employees, insurance, financing and business planning.

The February schedule includes:
Feb. 2 – 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Ottawa County Improvement Corporation (conference room), 8043 W. SR 163, Oak Harbor.


Feb. 23 – 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Terra Community College (Building B, Room 101), 2830 Napoleon Rd., Fremont.

Cosmetology, hair design services at Penta
The Cosmetology and Hair Design programs at Penta Career Center, located at 9301 Buck Rd. in Perrysburg Township, offer personal care services for the public during the school year. All services are performed by high school students under the supervision of professional cosmetology educators.

Services are available Tuesday through Friday from 8:30 to 11 a.m. or 12:15 to 2:30 p.m. Services include hair styling, hair cutting, hair coloring, permanent wave, chemical relaxing, facials, manicures, pedicures and waxing.

Costs range from $5 to $50, depending on the service.

Giant Garage Sale
Clay High School Annual Giant Garage Sale will be held March 5 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the high school cafeteria, 5665 Seaman Rd., Oregon.


Band fundraiser set
The Clay High School Band will hold a spaghetti dinner fundraiser Feb. 10 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., with proceeds to benefit the band’s field trip fund.

The old-fashioned home-cooked meal will include all-you-can-eat spaghetti with Italian sausage or tomato sauce, breadsticks and drinks. Entertainment will be provided by the Clay Jazz Band.

The cost is $7 for adults and $5 for 10 and under. Carryouts are available. Call Linda Rossler at 419-697-3597 for more tickets or more information.


Scholarships
The Northwest Chapter of the Ohio Credit Union League will be awarding two higher education scholarships, one for $2,000 and one for $1,500.

The winning application will also be submitted to the statewide scholarship program where five scholarships of $2,500 each will be awarded. Awards are based on an essay question. The deadline is Feb. 11.

 A memorial account has been established to honor the memory of Derek Griffin at the National Bank of Oak Harbor.
Derek, son of Gary Griffin and the late Susan Liske, died Oct. 31, 2010. He was a 2005 graduate of Oak Harbor High School and was active in music and sports. He was also a second degree black belt and fought in Italy for the U.S. Tae Kwondo team.

The money from the memorial fund will be distributed to a scholarship to benefit Oak Harbor High School students.

Contributions can be made to the Derek Griffin Memorial Fund at the National Bank of Oak Harbor, with offices located in Oak Harbor, Curtice, Genoa, and Port Clinton.


Nominations sought
Terra Community College is seeking nominations for its Distinguished Choral Leadership Award.

Each spring, the Terra Community College Choral Society presents the Distinguished Choral Leadership Award to an individual who has served as an influence and helped promote choral singing in Erie, Huron, Ottawa, Sandusky and Seneca counties.

Past recipients have included choir directors of high schools, churches, community music programs, as well as individuals who have contributed to the preservation and promotion of choral singing.

Submit nominations in the form of a letter defining the individual’s contributions to choral music and why the individual should receive the award. Nominators should include contact information. Submissions must be postmarked by Feb. 15.

The award recipient will be announced at the Terra Choral Society’s concert of Mozart’s Requiem March 12 and 13.
