Sixteen Genoa Middle School students won the chance to volunteer their help working along side Officer Esteban Reyes, Kathy Mapes and Cathrine Aldrich at the local Ottawa County Holiday Bureau for a day.
After collecting non-perishable food items, students purchased raffle tickets for 25 cents each, raising over $100 dollars. The money, along with more than 30 boxes of food, was donated to the Holiday Bureau.
The 16 winning tickets were drawn by Marisa Mapes during the middle school’s annual Turkey Day celebration.
On Dec. 9, all 16 winners went to Our Lady of Lourdes Church hall and helped high school FFA students unload trucks of food, check all the food for expiration dates and sort the food on long tables.
“The students enjoyed a pizza lunch and got first-hand experience working to help their neighbors in need,” said middle school guidance counselor Kathleen Shope. “It was a truly rewarding experience for everyone involved.”
